Rimfire 17 HMR Lefty woes - any suggestions?

In regards to your question about an adjustable objective. What this feature one a rifle scope will do is allow you to be more accurate by eliminating parallax at a specific distance say 100 yards for example by allowing you to properly focus the scope. Parallax being the effect of the crosshairs moving in relation to movement of your head. So say you move your head/eye right the cross hairs will move left in relation to the target causing you to adjust your aim to the right more, changing your point of impact on paper. If you have a scope with an adjustable objective, you can adjust it for the range you're shooting at to eliminate this so that the cross hairs will stay stationary even with slight movements in your head/eye position. As well there are also scopes that come with what is called a side focus, which does exactly the same thing, focus the optics to eliminate or minimize parallax.

I don't want a right hand rifle. Not sure how many ways I can say it.

Ignore them and find yourself a left hand rifle. I have a CZ 452 in 22LR and love it, so I wouldn't hesitate to try their 17HMR if CZ is where you would prefer to go.

Edit: I see you have followed my advice already. Smart and clairvoyant. Nice!

Thanks to all.
I put an order in for a CZ 452 American lefty in 17 HMR.
Looks like $650 ish CAN.
I guess the Browning wasn't so much after all : )

Suggestions for a good scope under $200 for groundhogs and target under 200 yards?
Would like to see the paper holes.
Great choice in rifles. I have that same one and like it a bunch. Depending on your uses and preferences, the triggers can use some help, but it is a minor project.

I have the .17 HMR in the lh 452. Great rifle, check out the Yodave trigger kit, contact him here on CGN or try ebay (got mine there a few years back).

Don't let anyone talk you out of a left hand rifle. How often do you hear righties on here talking about how much better they shoot and manipulate their left hand rifles??

Mine has the Yodave Trigger. Makes for a very nice trigger.

Exactly! That whole, 'just buy a right handed rifle' argument always cracks me up. I'll never go back to RH bolts.

Thanks gents - nice to have some lefty support.

As far as the Yodave Trigger - it seems to be just spring/shim for like $20.
Is it really better than what CZ use out of the box?
Is it more for down the line after a bunch of use maybe?

Do people suggest bipod and strap for this use (target and gophers)
Also, what would be a good, reliable, 17 HMR ammo for the gophers?
I don't mind paying more if it means the diff btw a humane take down and a misplace or light punch out at further distances.
Of course it's the shooter too.
I'm working on that - not bad but need work for sure : )

Yo dave kit makes the trigger far better than stock. I have it on all of my CZ rimfires. (Except my bnib 452fs)

For long range gophers, yes I recommend a good bipod. Harris is a good start.

As far as scope, I would maybe stretch your budget a bit if you can. Sub $200 optics at 200 yards are just that: sub-optimal.

Ammo wise, you pretty much have to find what your gun likes. Mine prefers 17gr Federal premium but has yet to shoot over 1"/100yds with anything.

Ok I'll go with the Yoda trigger then.
I like the rotation feature and the sturdy build of the Harris bipods.
As for scope, I'm leaning toward the Burris Timberline 4.5x-14x-32mm (as per the suggestion of the Burris rep based on the above mentioned criteria).
I agree that a quality scope for longer distance shooting is worth the extra cash.

I probably should have asked this earlier on.
Am I going to have problems finding 17 HMR (the good stuff and the plink stuff) for my CZ 452 in Canada? ) :
Also, if it comes down to only ordering one make (at least for the first batch), I was told the following
four were good ammo:
CCI
Federal
Remington
Hornady

I will try to test out several kinds, but any suggestions (other than the Federal 17 gr V-Shok)

There isn't a whole lot of differences between the ammo brands I hear. The most common complaint I hear is split cases with people who were using winchester ammo, so take that for what its worth.

What about availability in general in Canada?

Seems like lots of dealers on this site have stock. Wolverine, SFRC, Frontier Firearms and Ammosupply.ca all have stock.

Yes you're right.
I just confirmed the order for the CZ 452 from a local sporting store here in Montreal.
It's in stock so should arrive next Friday.
And he said they just did a big ammo order so plenty of 17 hmr available.
He's not sure if he can get the Burris Timberline scope though.
He does have the Harris bipods which is good.
I'm excited for my first gun!
Before now I was just borrowing my buddy's Savage 22 semi auto - pretty crappy tbh.
This is a totally different setup.

You sound excited, which is pretty much as it should be for your first new gun purchase. I hope it is everything you want it to be and that you enjoy yourself!

Most seem to have the best luck with the 17gr Hornady branded v-max ammo. Myself included.
