I'm gunna buy one as a cool defence toy, zombies only of course ;)
And I want to buy a spare 28" vent rib barrel for hunting but I've heard mixed reviews on this gun, I truly love the look and the price even more but can I count on it for "zombie" defence and hunting or is it just a cheap POS

Solid guns. I have no issue with mine. Very much like a mossberg 500 with the safety at the trigger guard. May cut corners elsewhere but after a look at the internals, I'm not sure where.

You can't go wrong they are a great value. I purchased one years ago which has since been passed down to a friend who uses and abuses it like I did with no issues whatsoever. I like the fact they have a cross bolt safety as well should you decide to change stocks, and there are plenty of accessories for them now

I've has mine since '90 and it functions flawlessly. It is very basic and you feel the recoil but they work fine.

Keep an eye on Cabelas.ca, the mossberg 500 field combo is priced at $329. You just have to keep watching the site to know when they're in. I've been watching for a couple months and they were listed as back ordered. Just last week I checked and they had received a shipment, so I called immediately and was lucky enough to get one. Now they are listed as back ordered. The combo has both the 18.5" and the 28" vent ribbed barrels. Good luck!

I have an 88 combo, with an ATI top-folding stock. I actually use it for duck hunting with the 28" barrel, and it gets a few laughs at the odd skeet shoot. It's also good slug gun, I have better luck with it than my old Hatsan MP, hitting a dinner plate at 50 yards no problem, even with the shorter barrel.

Buy the combo though...if you buy an 18.5" version, it will cost you far more later to add the longer barrel.

I think I paid 279 for the combo from a dealer on here...

With the ATI folder/pistol grip, I prefer the safety on the 88 to that of the 500.

Is the 88 drilled & tapped for a base like the 500 is? Haven't seen a Mav 88 up close... don't they have the forearms that are a 1 piece unit? Unsure of all the differences between the 88/500 other than the position of the safety.

If the OP wants a pistol grip, make sure to buy the Hogue Tamer or the Birdshead grip. Way better than the horrible one that ships with the Moss/Mav.

It is not drilled and tapped from factory, and yes the forearm is a single piece. But it can still be swapped out with Mossberg 500 forearms as long as you buy the action bars.

Off the top of my head the differences are:
Not drilled and tapped from factory.
Crossbolt safety instead of a Tang safety.
1 piece forearm.
No sling studs from factory.

I love mine, it's killed a few birds and a ton of clays.

Ditto. I have the combo. I have the 18.5" barrel and a pistol grip on mine. I have a Tac Star (TacStar?) case for it. it's my truck/camping gun.

There not drilled and tapped from the factory you have to get a gunsmith to do it but there's no real use

If you want to install an optic, there definitely is a use. Mav 88 is a solid shotgun, if you don't care about some of the downsides compared to a 500 - you are 'good to go'.

If you want to add a red dot and want a "do it yourself" option, look into a Weaver Convert-Mount.

Or get this with an 8 shot side saddle:

To each their own but I don't see a need to start hanging all kinds of stuff on a SG and IMO a bead sight is very effective….if you're willing to practice.
