As the title says, I am looking for some advice on optics for my 10/22 that is in a Troy T22 chasis. I have been doing a lot of reading, but the options and styles seem endless and I admit I find it a bit overwhelming. The experience on this forum is unparalleled, so hoping many of you will offer your thoughts and rationale.

Currently the ruger is stock, but I do plan on eventually changing the trigger group, barrel and, well... will likely get carried away and mod till there is nothing left to mod. The goal is to end up with a precision, match-grade rifle. I will likely be using this for both range plinking and longer distance gopher action. I would prefer one dedicated optic setup so I don't have to be switching out. I would like to keep it under $300.

So far it has been suggested to me that I look for a 1x8. I am completely open to all suggestions - just trying to learn what my best option is.

Thanks!

I have the same setup, I mounted a redfield tactical 2 X 7 that has the .22 turrets, it is great for plinking and I have shot racoons out to 150m by just dialing in the turret to the range, glass is nice too.

I would suggest a 2-7x for hunting and/or short-medium range plinking, or a 3-9x or 4-12x for target shooting and long range plinking. I had a 2-7x Leupold that was very nice, and I currently have a Bushnell AR-22 2-7x, it has a side knob for the Adjustable Objective which I prefer to the front barrel type AO.

Here is the AR-22:

That's a sweet looking setup. The slide knob for AO is interesting. I could see how that would be nice...gonna have to do some reading about that. I have been wondering if I will find the 2x7 limiting in long range, but also worry that at close range the 3- or 4- wouldn't give me a broad enough field of view. In all reality, what kind of distance can I expect to be achieving with my set-up once I upgrade my barrel? No point in getting a scope which extends beyond the effective range of the rifle.

What do you guys think about even lower-power variable optics? Thinking something from 0x or 1x up to 8x. Would I be able to combine an aimpoint, eotech or similar red dot style to something like this in the future? I realize that this is just a .22 and isn't worth a great deal or anything, but in all likelyhood I will be picking up something in the AR family in the future, so I would readily buck up some more $ now so that I would have a solid setup for future applications. But if it wouldn't be effective on the Troy 10/22 than there's no point in even contemplating that direction. Sorry if I seem all over the map - trying to get my head wrapped around the myriad of optical possibilities.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard/read really good things about Redfield scopes. Another gnut just picked up a Redfield Battlezone 2-7x34mm. While he hasn't mounted or tried it yet he is very impressed with the quality of finish, clarity of the glass, and crosshairs. He is going to get back to me with his thoughts after a day in the field. Best part is it was only $205!

i'm running a Vortex Diamondback 3x9x40 on my t22 and am very happy with it. However honestly I might suggest a red dot co-witnessed through the t22 integrated iron sights.. considering those sights are so great and make up what i would imagine is a decent portion of the chassis cost

I had a 1-4x scope on this rifle previously, but the 4x setting did not have enough magnification for me to make maximum use of the accuracy of this rifle. Even with an 8" barrel it is easily capable of 3/4" groups at 25 yards. I have found in the past that I always seem to underestimate the amount of magnification I will need. I swapped out the Leupold 2-7x on my target rifle, a DAR-22, and put on a Vortex 2-12x and it made a huge difference. At 12x I can take the heads off dandelions at 50 yards!

I have an AR-15 with and LMT upper that had a Burris Fastfire red dot, but I again found that I need more magnification so I went with a Bushnel 1-4x. I now have a CMMG .22 upper and went directly to the 1-4x power. For me this is the minimum magnification for a .22 plinker.

Here is the SR-22 with the 1-4x scope:
