Hi all, I am looking for recommendations for peep sights for an early 1900s Winchester 1895.

My question - receiver mounted or tang? Any model recommended in particuliar?

I'd really like to know what others use for peep sights on their 1895s. I don't care for the stock (semi)buckhorns and would like to investigate options for a peep.

Thanks :)

Thanks gents - any idea where I could find a Lyman 21? Ebay the best option?
Buffalo Arms makes reproductions - or did at least; they're just a short distance from here. The ones I saw were very nice, very expensive (relatively speaking); they still catalogue them:

I wanted one until I realized I would have to drill and tap Grandpop's old rifle. Seeing as how it made it through it's first 110 years without being drilled and tapped, I decided I wasn't going to do it now. I have decided that it will have official status as my cast bullet gun for hunting, and in that capacity I will muddle along with 225 grain flat points, my older eyes, and the buckhorn sights.

Yup, the Lyman 21 or as pictured from Buff. Arms.......they were avail. as a factory option on '95s for a spell(way back when).

It appears E-bay thought that item was to dangerious for us! :jerkit:

Personally I wouldn't drill a decent old 95 for a imitation side mount :runaway:
That said, the value of a real nice 95 wouldn't be hurt D&T for an original 21 IMHO:)
Also IMHO tangs just seem to be in the way of your hand on most Win lever guns, course again on the other hand what's you option for peep if you don't have a $$$$ 21 to put on it!

It'd be a real shame to drill and tap an original 95, especially if it is in nice original condition. I almost threw up in my mouth when I read this.
If the gun is already not original, or in very poor condition, just a shooter, and value is not an issue for you, a Lyman 21 or 38 would indeed look nice.
Personally, I wouldn't drill and tap any classic old Winchester.
Just out of curiosity, what cal is the rifle?

I don't believe that the sight if period correct would affect the value, as that's how some came from the factory. i think it would add to the value.

Well, I guess it depends on who wants it, but I've seen many left on tables that had period correct sights, but potential buyers were not sure if they came that way from the factroy or not. Some people won't touch a Winchester if the gun does not letter with that sight, or if they think at all it may have been added post-factory...though that can also be caveated with the rarity of the rifle, among other factors. But, that's not everyone. It will affect value for some, others will not care. Depends on the person.
