First I used ####ty ammo, then less ####ty ammo, didnt have any nice brass cartridges with me. The bolt stuck after shooting, I am a pretty big fella and I couldnt rack the bolt without shouldering it, I figure the crappy ammo's cartridges bulged or something in the chamber. Should I take it out again with good ammo and try? Or is this a serious problem that should be addressed before shooting again. IF its not the ammo, then could it be poor bolt lapping?

The ammo was barnaul and norinco ammo , the ladder didnt stick as much, but did after about 10 shots. the Branaul stuck a lot more and I put about 40 shots through it.

Try some good brand named commercial brass cased ammunition.
Clean the chamber before you do.

Clean the chamber is step number one. A .44 cal bore brush will work just fine. I am amazed how many people ignore the chamber

I am amazed at how many people dont read the problem carefully, it only happens AFTER I shoot a round, if it were #### stuck in the chamber, I would think unfired and snap caps would get stuck too.

I completely take down and clean everything front to back on new rifles.

Heat and pressure from firing will cause the shell case to stick, where as unfired/snap caps will extract just fine. Ive seen this many many times. Pull the bolt, get a flashlight, and look in your chamber. Its likely got a bit of excess oil or crud causing the issue.

I own two Ruger bolt action rifles including a 308WIN M77 and have fed them everything I can get my hands from cheap steel cases to high end brass. Neither have had an issue as you've described.

EDIT - Checking what i fired last year, two boxes of Barnaul, no problems.

Lacquer coating causing the fired cases to stick, had it happen in a bolt gun with Lacquer coated cases. I have fired barnaul in my scout but on 20rds and slowly to get a rough sight in.

Alright boys , thanks a lot for the help, will just have to wait for a range test again before the answer is solid. Sorry for my smarmy reply Blasted, I did clean the chamber before shooting, but now as I read, it could be from the lacquer, will update this thread... Probably after tomorrow.

No problem. Ive typed my fair share of replies that I later regretted.

There is no lacquer on the Norinco ammo. Have a close look for any machining marks or roughness in the chamber. I just bought, and returned, a brand new Ruger mini-30 which had a literal gouge in the chamber.

I'm guessing lacquer - had it happen in a CZ858 after blasting a bunch of surplus. Chamber clean and then use better ammo will be the end of the issue is my guess.

I'd go out and try it with proper SAAMI ammo with brass case. 2 reasons to do it.

A) that's what Ruger recomends you use, so you should at least find out if the gun works when shot with ammo it was designed for.

B) Brass cases, because they are softer, will give you a better idea of what the inside of the chamber looks like. If your problem is a rough chamber then your case is going to come out with dull rings around it. In my experience you don't see those signs as well on steel case ammo.

To be fair, I said thats what I was going to do, and the rounds are identical in size, just the military cartridge is not as hot. So, the SAAMI even states they dont consider it unsafe to fire .308 rounds through a 7.62 nato gun, though suggest against it, in this case, its the other way around and there are no safety issues and really should not be a problem.

I probably wont be able to get out and shoot until next turn around, if I do, I will post my findings.

How about a dab of grease behind the lugs or the bearing surfaces before yer next shooting session?
That last thing the metal needs is an opportunity to gall the steel (assuming it might be stainless).

Keep us posted.

Cheers, Barney.

So, been out a few times now, its working itself out of it, brass, steel lacquered, didint matter, thing was TOUGH to eject a spent case, its getting easier, though still not as smooth as any of the bolt actions I own.

accurate rifle though. Cheers.
