Getting a bit exasperated trying to buy a couple aftermarket recoil lugs for the 788. And NO, the US ads for lugs that fit both 700 and 788 are wrong! Different shank diameter! So, has anyone had any luck trying the Holland lugs for Sako / small Savage with the 788?

I have two 788s - curious as to why you would swap the stock lugs out? My 788s shoot better than my BDLs - a nearly impossible feat! Equipped with original barrel and lug...

If you don't have a lug at all, then I guess you need an aftermarket lug, but the factory 788 lug is excellent. Some where there are several factory lugs laying around from 788's that were re-barreled with no lug and sleeved for bench shooting...

I am putting together from parts - the factory lug that came with action is not parallel - 5 thou thickness difference between top and bottom of barrel shoulder. Planning to try a "switch barrel" with the 243 and the 308 barrel on hand.

I'm not a smith, but if you plan on bedding the lug why don't you take .009 to 0.010" stock material out of the bottom of the lug recess? I bedded my lugs and the bottom of the lug has no contact (about .004" clearance) with the stock. I also bedded about 1.5" in front of the lug and cured with action screws torqued tight. Those 788 barrels are far from a pencil barrel although they taper moreso than my old BDLs at the muzzle.

But I'm not kidding, all my BDLs shoot 1/4 MOA out to 300 yds (perhaps beyond) and my 788s consistently out perform them. For instance, here's a 3 shot group at 200 yds from a sh*t frame bench in a farmer's field. In this case, 65 gr Vmax and RE-15...ignore the top target (.270 load development). PS: I have a set of what I believe are Leupold bases rings-if you need them they're almost free...

I suggest you make the lug parallel. You only have to work one side very little. Is the face of the action square to the bolt throw?
