Powder Shortage in Canada?

I traveled across three provinces the other day going to a shoot. We stopped in at a bunch of gunshops in the small towns. I paid 70 per K for cci Br2 primers. Crazy! I wanted H4350 really bad, i found some but the price was $49 a LB. It was very hard to put it down. I just could bring myself to pay that kind of money.

Varget seems like it is the most restocked everywhere. 4831 and 4350, pretty rare.

I thought I saw H and IMr yesterday.

I saw some 335, CFE, I think some 4198. There was a few others. I wasnt really paying attention because I have enough to last me for awhile.

Thanks, ...I haven't looked around for pre rolled for my 45/70 Marlin 1895GBL. That cartridge is why I got the press in the first place. Plinking with the 45/70 eats a little more powder so its definitely cheaper to reload...

And what pre-rolled you can get will be pretty much "trapdoor" loads unless you're lucky enough to find some Hornady LeveRevolution. What you want for that bad boy/girl is some 405 gr hard cast (or heavier) and something to really get them moving, like RL7, 3031 or H335. Bullet Barn has the bullets but the powder.... :(

was in green diamond Moncton store today. seemed to have a fair supply of different powders. most in 1 pound cans but there was some in 4 pound jugs. not many large rifle primers but lots of sr/sp and shotgun primers. they had 18 cans of imr4198.

There has been a powder shortage now for about 3 years, nothing new. The previous posters gave some reasons but no one has mentioned that Barry Obummer's Homeland Security has ordered 1.6 Billion Rounds of ammo as a first installment. The powder companies have been running full out to supply the demand for them and have thus slowed down the production of other powders.

It is only a surprise to people who are not following the firearms websites from the US. .22 ammo has basically come to a stand still with the odd pocket of supply here and there.

Travelled to LA a couple of months ago and stopped in at a few sporting goods stores and some had ammo but most had very little.

Puts those wacko bunkered survivalists in Utah & Montana in a slightly different perspective. "Help, help! The paranoids are after us."

I just looked on the Higginson's website. Pretty much everything is out of stock. :(

Posts in these threads are always brand need and location specific .. We can't all live in GTA .. or Alberta/BC .. If you have to pay for postage you know there is a shortage, as most online sources dried up 8 months ago and have remained so .. W231, red dot, power pistol, etc are items that just are not out there at any price on line .. So many people have had to adjust ..

If you live next to a local ma and pa location you may find it a bit easier, but many of us like me are not as lucky .. And our tails of shortage are just as real, as the CGN'er from Kingston above who has no shortage in his world :)

Gouging is starting place by some dealers. Last week, I paid $59.00 for 1000 small pistol primers cause he could. The only reason that I bought locally was because I couldn't find any in Calgary. And the guy wonders why I've only bought from his store 4 times in 24 years that I've lived here!!

You should try the Russian Dominion primers from Canada Ammo. My friends and I recently ordered a mix of 40000 SP and LP and they work fine in all the semi autos & revolvers we've tried. Best part is if you order $200 worth shipping is free and if you order multiples of 5000 the price goes down another $2/1000. All in including tax (5% GST) and shipping we paid $29.40/1000. Sure beats $59/1000.

Had a call from Cabelas a week back. I thought I would get in line for some 231 as they said it was backorder-able on the website.

The lady that called basically said they were canceling the order for me as the only shipping they had from their warehouse to me was by a freight company (Day & Ross) and the 4 lbs of powder would cost $ 214 plus some other charges.

I had to agree so thats out. Point is there are no local places to buy powder here.

I was at WSS today talking to the guy in firearms and he said they just got their powder for the year and no 231 or RL7 plus a bunch of other ones. He suggested I start looking for alternate recipes for the powders they did have for my calibers. He also told me of the 1.6 billion round order which will have another billion to follow.

I don't quite know what to think of people who get 18 months into a powder shortage before they notice. Should I be happy for their fortune in that they found what they needed for so long, or take pity that they evidentally don't shoot enough?

I managed to get 2 lbs of IMR 4198 for the 45/70 rounds when I plink through the prerolled HSM Bear load 430 grain RNFP rounds I have :) I hope to have scored a 1000 round case of 45ACP Federal from a site sponsor. That should keep me in ammo for a while.

I am new to reloading and when I bought my Lee turret press 3 years ago there was lots of powder around. The press sat in the box until a month ago when I bought a Glock 21 from a board member here and thought better get setup to reload.

Guess i wasnt paying attention to world events that sucked all the powder into the black hole. Adapt and overcome like they say

Have not found Aliant, Hodgen or IMR anywhere in Canada for the last year. Well yes have found a bit here and there but nothing to talk about. Shooten my muzzle loader powder rifles to keep up my shooten skills.
