This is a great little gun!!
I purshased one of these guns with the Bushnell scope last year.
It's a great little gun! Shoots straight, never fails, and I've been having fun pegging off grey squirrels around my acreage with it.
It's become my favourite shooter--after shooting a lot of .308, the .22 feels "cute", and it's very cheap to run. I had to laugh--here
I was comparing ammo prices at my LGS--50 round boxes--and suddenly I realized...what am I doing here? This stuff is so inexpensive
I could buy 1000 rounds for about $65 or so! So I got as many different types as they had in the store.
That plastic stock felt too cramped for me, so I replaced in with a fabulous laminate from Boyds. Five stars, it's very comfortable, and I
think it looks great. I also added a Champion bipod. If you shoot your little Savage a lot, I expect you'll start to hate the cheap bipod.
Get a good one, you won't regret it.
While I had no issues with the Bushnell's performance, it's duplex reticle didn't give me the graduations I wanted, and the elevation and
windage drums were hard to adjust. I did discover that my 100 yard hold-over is just about where the lower cross hair begins to thicken.
That's about 6" up from your 50yard zero. I tried cranking the elevation knob 24 clicks, and that worked OK, except that I found all that
adjusting to be too fussy, so I advise to just continue to use your hold-over.
I recently replace the Bushnell with a Redfield Revolution TAC 3-9x40 and that's made a big difference. It's a better reticle, and the exposed
drums allow me to just crank on 6 MOA for my 100 yards, then forget about it.
I'm very happy with my range performance--It's shooting sub MOA @100 with the right ammo (more on that later!). When I'm done I can
just spin it back to 'zero' and it's spot on back at 50 yards.
Ammo-- My best results to date have been with CCI Mini-mags (1235fps) or CCI Velocitors (1435fps).
They've been shooting ~.70 MOA 3 shot groups at 100 with the best group going .40". I'm very happy with that.
BTW-- CCI CB shorts (710fps): Spot on at 25 feet, but by 25 yds they've dropped 3"; IDK if they reach out to 100, but they're fine for squirrels close-in. They're the quietest of the lot it you have nervous neighbours.
The other day I picked up a bulk pac of Federal "Target Grade Performance" (1200fps) but the best I could do with them was a couple of
3" groups at 100! Mind, there was a light breeze blowing, but that ammo looks, well, 'crude'-- whereas the first two I mentioned are copper-plated.
DK if that makes any difference. I'll have to go back on a totally calm day and retry those Feds to see if they can't do better.
I LOVE MY LITTLE SAVAGE!!
