Impulse buy Savage Mark II with Bull barrel

This is a great little gun!!

I purshased one of these guns with the Bushnell scope last year.
It's a great little gun! Shoots straight, never fails, and I've been having fun pegging off grey squirrels around my acreage with it.
It's become my favourite shooter--after shooting a lot of .308, the .22 feels "cute", and it's very cheap to run. I had to laugh--here
I was comparing ammo prices at my LGS--50 round boxes--and suddenly I realized...what am I doing here? This stuff is so inexpensive
I could buy 1000 rounds for about $65 or so! So I got as many different types as they had in the store.

That plastic stock felt too cramped for me, so I replaced in with a fabulous laminate from Boyds. Five stars, it's very comfortable, and I
think it looks great. I also added a Champion bipod. If you shoot your little Savage a lot, I expect you'll start to hate the cheap bipod.
Get a good one, you won't regret it.

While I had no issues with the Bushnell's performance, it's duplex reticle didn't give me the graduations I wanted, and the elevation and
windage drums were hard to adjust. I did discover that my 100 yard hold-over is just about where the lower cross hair begins to thicken.
That's about 6" up from your 50yard zero. I tried cranking the elevation knob 24 clicks, and that worked OK, except that I found all that
adjusting to be too fussy, so I advise to just continue to use your hold-over.

I recently replace the Bushnell with a Redfield Revolution TAC 3-9x40 and that's made a big difference. It's a better reticle, and the exposed
drums allow me to just crank on 6 MOA for my 100 yards, then forget about it.
I'm very happy with my range performance--It's shooting sub MOA @100 with the right ammo (more on that later!). When I'm done I can
just spin it back to 'zero' and it's spot on back at 50 yards.

Ammo-- My best results to date have been with CCI Mini-mags (1235fps) or CCI Velocitors (1435fps).
They've been shooting ~.70 MOA 3 shot groups at 100 with the best group going .40". I'm very happy with that.
BTW-- CCI CB shorts (710fps): Spot on at 25 feet, but by 25 yds they've dropped 3"; IDK if they reach out to 100, but they're fine for squirrels close-in. They're the quietest of the lot it you have nervous neighbours.
The other day I picked up a bulk pac of Federal "Target Grade Performance" (1200fps) but the best I could do with them was a couple of
3" groups at 100! Mind, there was a light breeze blowing, but that ammo looks, well, 'crude'-- whereas the first two I mentioned are copper-plated.
DK if that makes any difference. I'll have to go back on a totally calm day and retry those Feds to see if they can't do better.

I LOVE MY LITTLE SAVAGE!!

hey thanks for all the info ! I sighted in and have been using American Eagle high velocity. Had it out again today, love it. I suspect both the stock and optic will be replaced. Did you bed the stock or is it just a drop in ?

Im a fan of synthetics and black. So I will prolly get a target or tactical type stock.

You want 'tactical'? I got tactical...

No bedding, just dropped it in. Easy peasey.

Here's my Little Savage hiding behind my Big Savage. He black.
He's wearing the Redfield here before it got transferred.

Check Boyds' site-- they have a "Tacticool" stock for the MkII you might like:

The Tacticool is an ITAR "listed" item and can't be shipped to Canada...

I got a Savage MK2 BV (same as yours but with a laminate stock I think)

I can do 1in groups at 50yards with it without much trouble. (With any kind of ammo and using a cheap/nice 4x scope)

I am 100% sure I printed quite a few sub 0.5in groups with it. Haven't shot it for a while, but I do remember it liked CCI Blazer.
I tried CCI Quiet in it once, showed no improvement.

I impulsivly bought a 22LR Savage MKII FV, just waiting for the floods in Manitoba to clear off so our good folks at Wolverine Supply can process the order. Already got all kind of 22LR ammo sitting at home waiting for the test :p

Ja, I remembered that just after posting. Forgot I was on CGNutters and I thot the OP was an American. Sorry about that!
btw-- IDK why that stock is on the verboten list. What, because they painted it black?? Or because they named it the "T" word?
It's just a regular old precision stock--it doesn't make a MkII into a FA 'assault rifle'. Tell me why, if you can. Thx

These rifles are capable of shooting 0.5" groups @ 50 yards. Remember, MOA is 1/60 of a degree and it spreads about 1" per 100 yards, so 0.5 MOA would be approx. 0.25" @ 50 yards.
I used to have a BTV .22 LR which shot a 0.25" group (5 rounds @ 50 yards), but only once and under perfect shooting condition.

Keep us posted on the results of your ammo tesing.

It will be an ''average Joe'' test. Meaning, I'm using a bipod, not bench or sandbag. Still shopping for decent optic but not crazy expensive one. As far as ammo goes, I'm testing what is commercially available to the average plinker (no crazy match ammo, I'll be using it for ''accurate plinking'' and critters hunting) so far I have :

-CCI minimag
-CCI Stinger
-Remington Yellow Jacket
-Remington Golden Bullets
-American Eagle 38gr HP et 40gr round
-Federal Bulk
-Winchester Dynapoint
-Winchester Powerpoint

My MK II FV-SR really likes CCI Pistol Match ammo. If you can find some to try I highly recommend it.

After reading this thread I went out and picked up one for myself and had it at the range the following day. Even with my cheap Simmons scope I was putting together some impressive groups at 60 and 100m. Seems to shoot everything but Winchester super x well. For whatever reason it won't extract spent Winchester casings from the chamber. Other than that this is a great rifle for the money, wish I had bought this instead of the 10/22 last month!

My son bought the same one as the OP (Mark II Synthetic with heavy barrel) put an inexpensive Bushnell on it and sighted it in himself. Then he said "here, you try it". This is my first attempt:

Mine came with the inexpensive Bushnell already attached. It's now part of the "bundle"
I replaced it with a Redfield Rev/Tac cos I had it on the shelf, but the Bushnell worked fine out to 100yds.

BTW-- Nice shootin'!
