Shorten PAL Approval Times

I just went through Rpal process. It was 2 months from the time it was mailed to the time it was in my hand. I phoned ti inquire and they said they are 6 weeks behind on opening the envelopes. I know a guy who is now on his 4th month. I think his application was forward to CFO for face 2 face. The CFO's at least in Manitoba seem to be backed up.

Still waiting on first time PAL/RPAL in BC, they received the application april 8th, took til the last week of may to make it to the cfo where it has now been for a month and a week. Called BC cfo office and got a rude response and told that it takes at least a month or two for the cfo to approve it. Missed out on bear season, and going to miss out on a few shooting competitions as well.. Has anyone had any luck with any particular method of speeding up the process with the cfo?

First-time PAL and RPAL from British Columbia:

May 22 Challenge PAL Exam
May 25 RPAL Course and Exam
May 26 Mailed application to Miramichi via Expresspost
May 28 Notice from Canada Post that mail was routed incorrectly. Expected delivery now May 30.
May 30 Delivery notification from Canada Post.
June 13 (2 weeks since delivery) Checked CFP website. Signed up for GCKey. Clicked "Individual Web Services" link. Filled in personal info plus entered "00000000" as license number. Received error message that info doesn't match records.
June 13 First follow-up call to CFP. Was advised that error message is expected and means that application hasn't been processed yet. Was told that current backlog for initial processing is 4 weeks.
June 25 Credit card charged $80.00 by "RCMP/GRC 1-800-731-4000 MIRAMICHI NB"
June 27 (4 weeks since delivery) Checked CFP website and successfully logged in. Could see application number (10 - 00######XX - 05) and date received (2014/06/02). Current status said that the application had completed initial processing and was in progress.
July 3 (34 days since delivery) Second follow-up call to CFP. Was told that CFP wanted to contact only one reference. Gave me my application number (10 digits, the 00######XX part from above) and the extension # for my reference to call in.
July 3 Reference called in afternoon. Status on CFP website changed to "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued." Can see PAL number on website.

I didn't have to do a phone interview myself. Neither did my spouse. Only one of my references was interviewed. I didn't have to answer "Yes" to any of the questions on the application and I had my spouse sign the application. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the experience. Only 6 days after the minimum 28-day waiting period, and I'm pretty sure I could have sped that up a little by calling in earlier in the final week.

Now to check the mail every day for the next 2 weeks.

Good luck!

RPal time frame for me:
Mailed May 15.
May 20 Was Received.
June 19 Showed up on website. Saying initial process has started.
June 19 Called in and one reference did their interview.
June 19 Website now saying "Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress. Please check the status again at a later date."
June 25 Called CFO how is my application,he said everthing OK.
June 27: Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canadian Firearms Program Toll Free number. (1-800 731-4000)[/QUOTE]
July 4 Calling asking when i can get PAL ,told me my PAL card issued on July 3

hope i can receive on Monday

i was called two days ago, and the lady did in fact call me about missing info :p

she told me my file has been processed and i now have the wait 28 days till my pal is sent to me by mail.

i was called by the rcmp not even a month after sending 921.

Is there a shorter processing time for those who are getting JUST their PAL (not both RPAL & PAL)? My cousin had his in a month and a half but just applied for his PAL, not RPAL.

There is no shorter processing time, it's 28 days minimum for both PAL and RPAL. RPAL just tends to take longer since there is a couple extra steps.

- Sent out my renewal through Express Post (license #3 for me) mid May
- It was received on May 26th 2014. Credit Card was charged shortly afterwards.
- It was sent to the CFO in BC on June 6th 2014
- Late June or Early July: Received an ATT in the mail, valid until my current license expires. Cool! Never even asked for it... guess they saw I need a new LTATT and sent this while I wait for the new stuff to go through
- Website still shows the application is processing as of today, July 7 2014

It expires in September, right around opening day for hunting. I haven't called in yet, as I'm sure they're busy and all... but starting on the last week of July, I will be feverishly calling every day. Don't want to miss out on any hunting or be in unlawful possession. I've heard from other hunters who haven't get their PAL back in time for hunting season that they'll "probably be ok as long as the firearms are kept locked up at home".

Funny to see first time applicants get their PAL/RPAL faster than someone can get their license renewed the third time around. Lucky dogs! Maybe new licenses take presidence over renewals that aren't at too much risk of expiring. That would actually make some sense. Hope it works out that way for my girlfiend, as she's sending her first-time PAL application off next week after she has the references filled out and signed.

I have been advise that when it comes to renewing, you have 1 year to renew. If the renewed issue is not finished by the time it expires, it will not be renewed (with many many circumstantial exceptions). You have 1 year to complete the renewal so get it done as soon as it comes up. Heck, you are going to do it anyways, right? Then you wont have to worry about sending express, you wont have to worry about the time it takes to get processed, and you will have a license for basically 6 years.

Please, correct me if I am wrong. I would like to keep it straight in my head as well. :)

I believe you are correct about being able to renew a year in advance. Sending it Express Post or by some means with tracking / signature is a good idea regardless. It might help cover your butt if someone else drops the ball.

Funny enough I was buying some ammo at Wholesale Sports back in October and the guy suggested that I'd better send my renewal soon. Thought it seemed a bit crazy at the time since my last renewal only took a few weeks. I'll be following the advice next time around though.

I'm not too worried about the current situation. I'm pretty sure if I become a squeaky wheel in a few weeks here they'll get it pushed out for me pretty quick. Whenever I've talked to someone there they seem pretty darn reasonable. I think things just get a little unorganized at times. Definitely good to follow up though... don't want to be that guy who calls in a week or two prior to expiration when there's no time to do anything.

They received it march 5th and was issued July 9th
Now I can pick up a couple rifles I have had sitting in the safe at my favourite firearm store

So a co-worker that I turned on to shooting was waiting for his RPAL for a while now. I told him to call in and ask if there was any thing holding up his application. He called in today and they told him that the 28 day waiting period starts after the last reference interview.
Needless to say I was WTF when I heard that one.

That's INCORRECT and FYI their website is down don't know what happened there today

The RCMP took my money for a restricted licence in February... Every time I call they tell me to wait another 3 weeks. It has been twenty weeks. What happen :c

Is this a normal wait time?
