Hey guys, looking at rebarreling my Savage 11 in 223. Thing is I dont want another 223, want something bigger (243, 308, 7mm-08). I know with the 223 bolt face thats impossible but what im wondering is if I can find a bolt out of another model 11 out of say a 243/308, will the bolt fit in this action? Then with a new barrel and magazine I should be good to go?

Or is a guy better off to sell it, and just buy what he wants?

Im still new to this reloading/custom work so any advice is greatly appreciated!

You would likely spend more to convert the rifle than to buy a new one. Not only that, you would have to wait for it all to come together.

Buy an existing rifle in the cartridge you desire and keep both of them.

The 243 is a fine cartridge. You need to be careful what you buy though. Twist rates are what will make or break your happiness with your new purchase. Decide whether you are going to shoot heavy, long for diameter bullets or just lighter normal length bullets.

If you're looking for a racehorse, the normal length bullets will work fin in a 1-14 twist.

I would love to, except I have higher orders from the GF that if I want another gun, one has to go...thats why I considered just making a custom one. Ill probably end up selling it/trading it for a 243/308/257 at some point

GF, Rifle?????? What has she got to say about it??????? Oh well your life. Maybe that's why I'm on my second wife and the wannabes are all gone????

They say "Happy wife, happy life" then again, hunting makes life happy too so I mean it is a toss up...:D

That and the fact she does want new furniture, and she said 2 guns ago she was getting it before I bought another gun so guess its her turn...

Depends on the guy's budget. And if he's doing the work himself or paying somebody. Reloading is the easy relatively inexpensive part.
The chances of finding a bolt are likely slim.
Ever think about a 6 x 45(aka 6mm-.223)? .223 based 6mm. You'll need a new barrel, likely a custom barrel, but that's all. Give you 100 grain loads. Close to the same OAL with heavy bullets. No mag issues.
All the manufacturers make dies. Brass appears to be a neck up your own.

Talk to Mystic-Precision about the barrel. Shilen makes 'em for Savages.
There's data on Hodgdon's site so you can have a look at it.

a rifle I have been wanting to build is a 7mm ( or even a 6.5 mm ) tcu . it is 233 necked up to 7mm or 6.5 mm with a sharp 40 degree shoulder

it should make for a wonderful deer rifle with a 120 grain bullet out to as far as a guy can hit one using a 4x scope .
