I have a customer that is asking me to make them a "on the budget" precision rifle. My customer wants to build a M24, or a M40 and we all know how much a real McMillan stock runs...

My question is if anybody has heard of the review on the company overall quality regarding there barrel blanks. For reference, here is there web address, http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/

They are all around good blanks. They are not match grade precision barrels, but they are perfectly adequate for hunting rifles and likely somewhat better than so called "factory" barrels.

drove by there factory/ wear house last weekend . very nice set up. security cameras up the wazoo. will have to make an appointment and go by on a week day next time.

I've used a couple of their blanks. They are as good as any others out there. Maybe I've been lucky.

One of the rifles I have with a GM barrel started out with a 1 1/8" OD and a .3080 bore 1-12 twist. I spent a lot of time making sure it was concentric in the lathe when chambering with a Palma Match Reamer and threading it to fit onto a trued Rem 700 action with .002 headspace. I kept the full profile and put it in a stock I had kicking around from the HBR days. That rifle shot far better than I expected. One of my buds that was still into HBR decided it would shoot better than his rifle so we took the barrel off the Remington receiver and turned it down to HBR specs.

That rifle is still going strong. The owner has put close to 2500 rounds down it and we are thinking about turning it out of his Stolle action, shortening it and rechambering it to clean up the wear on the leade. It will be interesting to see if the accuracy is effected. I guess that will depend entirely on how well I do my set up.

Anyway, I have used both rifle and pistol barrel blanks from GM and haven't had a bad one. I ordered mine through Bits of Pieces out of Delta, BC. Very consistent bores in all of them. Nice smooth transition from one end to the other when passing a tight patch through. That is usually a very good indication on a new barrel that it will shoot well.

The 1.2x27x12 twist looks like the barrels I used. I thought they were 1.125 dia.

Anyway, they were quite a bit cheaper back then. Just one thing though, by the time you get them here, plan on them being twice the price advertised.

I could have it here in 1-2 weeks, if production time isn't a killer. My local border knows I'm a gunsmith, and I have a US address to ship items to. the 1:12 it is! thank you all for the input. I appreciate it very much!

I hope you understand the legalities of doing that. My understanding is that the US regards barrels and blanks as ITAR controlled items. Bringing them across could be risking your freedom and your entire future.

There are a few ways I can inform you on how to import blanks. Some are... grey areas, others are 1000% legal.
1: Get an exporting license for the state.
2: Get a local firearms dealer to import it for you.
3: Because it is a blank, it has no chamber, or threads, and it can be considered tool steel.
4: As long as it is under $100 (It may have changed since last I looked) You can bring it across - the whole ITAR crap.

Hope this helps!

I've done it before, allot of hoops to jump thought, just need to prep the paper work. But yes, you are correct.

Sounds like you know what you are doing, and I'll leave you to it. However, more often than not people do not know what they are doing and think that you can just drive stuff across the border without issue. Just looking out for ya! :D

Very much appreciated, nice to know some people care. Out here in pop-tart land not many people do. The info is out there, just need to learn to work the system, muhahahaha! Pays to be evil! Info is there for anyone to use!

It's all 'bout interpertashun and how well one can werkie it..............

Don't be forgitt'n photos of this project.

The "project" will not be posted on the forum unless the client asks for it to be. My clients matters are not the matter of the public. My projects on the other hand will be posted once I get all the parts for it. If you just want to see what a M40 is, google it.
