Converted Caliber Antiques- The Catch-22 The CFC has created

Letter or no letter I will continue to enjoy my antiques, They have not re-written the definition of an antique in the firearms act or on the RCMP website yet and I will continue to use the template letter in the sticky section for mine.

The only one I have that could cause concern would be a pre 1898 that was 41LC converted to 38 special.... I did save all the components in the event I ever wanted to fire 41LC again. Although this is still ok with the their latest rules I hope I am never forced to change her back.

The entire idea of getting a letter for something that does not need one is ridiculous anyway....

I think I will write a letter to my MP.

Good idea, perhaps write more than one, repeatedly.

RCMP needs their asses sued, like they do with the ATF in the US all the time.
Sig only sued ATF recently for their draconian policies.

We should do the same, organize some sort of RCMP ass wiping fund, and sue their asses once a year, oh wait....forgot I'm in The peoples republic of Canada where courts protect the police.

Back to nagging my MP I guess, that seems like all we can do.

Once we have the MP to push it then we just post here and keep bumping it till ever antique gun collector sends a email to that MP
My writeing skills are very poor but i can get my point accross i think theres others here much better at that than me.
I really like this idea. Once we have the MP who will be the 'point man', then we can talk to our own MP's as well, and let them know that so-and-so MP is the one to follow up with. I'm not sure we should wait until just before an election to do this ... there may not be a majority gov't after the election.

True ^ but whos the best MP for this job ? and whos rideing is he in. im not thinking john Duncan is the right guy for this. hes a really nice guy helpfull but id rather have a more shark like MP to do it if you know what i meen.

What happens if an owner of a previously lettered antique, loses his RCMP letter? Can you get a new one or are you asked to register?

Your letter will still be on file with the government and you can get a copy through a freedom of information application.

I think that Gary B does the best he can but I think his hands are tied in terms of how much he can change. I strongly suspect that the inner circle of the Conservative Party decide on what motions they will allow and probably base their decision on how many votes they will gain or lose by any given action.

Perhaps a good beginning, in terms of action, would be to contact Solomon Friedman and ask him to post a topic discussing discrepancies between law and policy and in particular to comment on changed caliber antiques and on frames or receivers of prohibs being prohibited. I also think it would be good to forward the same question on to Gary Breitkreuz and to Lorne Gunter (newspaper columnist)

cheers mooncoon

Ok well I emailed and phoned Garry Breitkreuz the policy changes and some info i have that will let him hammer this B.S .
With any luck we might even see some changes for the better but im not holding my breath.
I told them to contact me if there going to make any changes as one word in the wrong place can screw us worse off than we are now.
I asked them to get the policy change ended because it can make honest Canadians into criminals.
Sandy his co worker is gona spell check everything i sent him so no worries there :)
Once we get things set up i will start a Post that will have his contact info and everyone can have a voice by emailing him there concerns with the new policy change.
Its fight back or lay down and be steped on at this Point.

Thanks, Dingus. I want to personally talk with my MP (Conservative) but will hold off until you post that info. I want my MP to know he's not the only one who has been asked to do something about this and that there is another MP actually working on this.

Wow Dingus thanks!

The RCMP needs to be taken to court constantly it seems. Nothing like having to take your own Police force to trial.........and who says we aren't looking at a Police State?

So former no-go cartridge guns that are currently antique status stay that way unless you request a letter? So there is now another reason not to get an RCMP letter as it is now voluntary registration of some guns.

Here is the alternate letter for download: Canadian Antique Status Firearms Letter PDF Download

I recently spoke to the Ontario CBSA officer who inspects firearms at the mail boarder and told me that that particular letter is more than sufficient. "41Colt" has done a great service to us for drafting this letter, citing the criminal code is a great reference as well if you ever had to show it to a LEO.

Thanks "41 Colt" for drafting up this letter. I will place this in my range bag along with my other letters just in case an uninformed LEO or CO does some snooping.

A few weeks ago I was target shooting at our hunt camp and one of our camp members brought along his OPP buddy. I let him shoot my Tavor with a 10 round LAR pistol mag and he asked how I could convince one of his co workers or a CO that this was legal. I showed him my letter collection from my range bag and he said, "that should work OK".

It may be sufficient, but it's full of half truths and anyone who had recently read the regulations would pick them up. Many lines should end with "is legal in some scenarios", rather than simply "is legal". If you want to be safe, you'd best print off the relevant sections of the Firearms Act, Criminal Code, and don't rely on one paper.

I believe OP and others in his situation are opening themselves up to criminal charges by not registering these guns. The change in policy does make sense (from their perspective), since they like to use FRT numbers for everything now.

Unless you are ready to go through a lengthy legal battle that you very well may lose, you should probably wipe off your fingerprints, vacuum seal it, and go bury it under a tree. Even registering it, at this point, is admitting to illegal possession of an unregistered restricted firearm.

Just think of the T97 debacle. Or consider what would happen if someone tried to register an old handgun or full auto that they forgot they had from 70 years ago. If you didn't register it in an amnesty, it becomes too late.

I've registered more than one restricted firearm. Some were never registered, some under the old green slip system. No black helicopters as of yet.
It's too bad the RCMP aren't following the law themselves.

Everyone put on your tinfoil hats!!!!!!

Seriously though, just be discreet, enjoy your antiques and follow the laws as they are written on the RCMP website. Letters are not required and we should all take advantage of that stipulation. The more we govern ourselves, the less we need to have the RCMP govern for us.

Thanks for the kind words regarding the letter guys. Good to hear from the CBSA's point of view.

Even registering it, at this point, is admitting to illegal possession of an unregistered restricted firearm.

But at that point it is registered to you, the only problem would arise if you did not have an RPAL.

I don't know if anyone has seen this before but I was able to get a copy of the CFC's policy change. I also have an email from a tech explaining the change to their policy.
