I was in WSS the other day and they had boxes of Winchester .22 Shot shells, with #12 shot in them. Anyone use these? How do they work? I bought a box to try out when I'm at the range next, not sure what I will use them for though.

I bought some just for kicks one day. Out of my buckmark pistol they shot about a 12" pattern at 15ft. Out of my savage bolt 24" barrel, i got a 18" donut pattern at the same distance.

Not really good for much other than some entertainment, IMHO

They are perfect (and I think designed for) shooting vermin where you can't safely use regular rounds - specifically, we used them back home for pigeons & rats inside our barns. Effective at short range, and no holes in the walls, roofs, or livestock. :)

They are good for pest control at close range with minimal damage to the surrounding area, ie, barn wall, roof, etc. Meant to kill mice, rats, pigeons, and the like. CCI also has a version of these.

Have fun!

they are actually quite quiet and effective within 10-15 feet. The problem with the CCI shot shells is the capsule at the front that contains the shot. It will spin with the rifling in your barrel, the shot will continue to rotate as it clears the muzzle centrifuging outwards into a doughnut pattern with a nice empty spot in the middle where you were aiming. pattern some on cardboard to find your effective range with it.

The cci ones from my glock cover a standard ipsc target from about 5 yards away,
Was fun, but as a city kid, I don't have much use and doubt I will ever use up what I have or buy more of em,
may try and get a squirrel this summer tho?
Always hated those little bastards.

We also had pistol versions that we called "snake shot" - they were very effective on rattlers & prairie dogs:

I know the steel stuff will trash the the rifling, we used them on a few pests on the farm once or twice you know that odd time where that .410 is overkill or will damage the structure behind the target. The stuff is more of a novalty then anything. I know of a guy that used and old AR7 with a wore out barrel to shoot that stuff at gofers and pest birds. Then is kid shot a bunch of barn sparrows with it and that was that no one ever seen the rifle or the shot again.

I have them in my store only mine are the winchester with a fold crimp at the top. Field report from a customer goes something like this: " I saw the mouse running along the baseboard and I just happened to have the shotshells out so I let him have it!! Results - Dead varmint and very light peppering of the surrounding baseboard." I LMAO thinking about this fella on safari in the living room. Obviously a bachelor!!

I use them. I have the best luck with the CCI, better pattern anyways. I bought an old Cooey with the intention of pulling the rifleing out, but before my project began I learned it is not legal to remove rifleing from a gun.. Go figure.
The Cooey turned out to be a great shooter, the wife refinished the stock and now it gets used almost daily.

By effective range, maybe 10ft. Any farther they suck. I Could not kill a pigeon at 10ft. Shot him atleast 5 times. They are pretty good for mice and snakes. Its what my wife uses for snakes.

Do you have a reference to legislation that says it is illegal to remove the rifling?

Thanks,
Cal.

Uhm... simply using a rifle slowly removes rifling.... so does that mean that a shot out rifle is a prohibited device? no? didn't think so.
