Maybe, but also certainly not. It's a sportered No 4. Barrel length is given at 24.5". JC had an 18.5" bbl. It also says "converted for sporting use" pretty prominently in the ad. Receiver is visibly not scalloped as the JC was, and the sights go to 1300 yds as for the No 4 - JC sights go to 800 yds.

I dunno if it's such a steal really - $19.88 in 1960 is about $165 today; you can still get a LE sporter, Mosin or SKS for about that. $3.59 in 1960 is about $30 today, or $.75 a round. Meh... you can buy 7.62x54R for about half that today.

I have to disagree with your inflation numbers. Prices today are approximately 22-24 times what they were in 1960 across the board IMHO. Look at gas and bread. $19.98(1960) equals $439.56(2014)

I even remember a bag of potato chips for .05cents. That's a Coke and two bags for 0.17cents if you left the bottle. 0.20 cents if you took the bottle home:cool:. Today in any corner store the small bags are .99 and the coke is 1.29. That's 4.27 for the same thing or approx 22 times more. The same .05 28-30 gram bag retails now round 0.99.

The No4Mk1 at 14.99 in 1960 dollars,...is $330 in today's pesos. Until just a few years ago a nice No4 was just $330.


Just as back in 1960,.... only die hard-on collectors had the really nice stuff. The guy driving the '49 chevy in 1960 with not enough change in his pocket, 0.52cents to put 2 gallons of gas in in to get to work and back till he cashed his $58.00 paycheck, did not run out and buy a $79.99 rifle(No4Mk1(T) or Savage99). Momma and the four kids needed something to eat that week.

Interesting, and all the more to the point then - we can actually buy more for our firearms dollar today than in the bad old days.

FWIW though, those aren't "my" inflation figures, I just punched the numbers into the Bank of Canada inflation calculator based on the CPI.

I used the same site to see what the numbers are. Some items are low while many are inline with today's prices. It inflates $19.99(1960) to $162.37(2014)
