Use Case Filler or Not?

I am loading some 100gr hard cast in 7.62x54 using 20gr of SR4759 thanks to the powder shortage this is the first time I have loaded with this powder. Since it is a light load should I be using a bit of filler to keep the powder at the bottom of the case?

Normally I use 2400 for plinking rounds with no filler since it is not case sensitive so any advice from others that have loaded with SR4759 would be helpful.

Thanks

I don't use a filler, my logic has been that the fast burning power typically used with cast bullets burns very easily, and that even if the primer flame runs across the top of the powder column when lying flat in the cartridge case, a hot primer will fill the entire air space with fire, and the cartridge will fire normally. But in a recent phone conversation with Why Not, Ted told me of the experimenting he and others have done with compressed medium burning rate powders and a filler of cream of wheat under plain base cast bullets where the powder and filler are separated with a cotton patch. I'm intrigued, so as soon as I have some time to get back to my loading bench I intend to try some with the .30/06, the .375s (Scovile and Ultra) and the .458. My cast bullets are on the hard side, and are gas checked, so leading isn't usually a problem for me, except in my fast twist barrels. These loads though typically run around 2300 fps, (not in the .458 with heavy bullets though) so that will be interesting, and I'm interested in comparing accuracy to my normal cast loads.

some powders work well with fillers ( reduce charge and work up----> below min )

Look for stuff by Larry Gibson using Dacron ---- there is a how to on that site

ps I have used Dacron and cast bullets in A Norinco m305 with full function

SR-4759 is a large grain bulk powder specifically designed for reduced load and 20 grains should nearly fill the case. Meaning you do not need any fillers, also anytime you are shooting reduced loads in bottle neck cases it is recommended that Dacron fluff be used. Cream of wheat type fillers were first used in straight sided black powder cases, and in a bottle neck case there is the possibility of COW clumping in the neck of the case and clogging the bore.

I use 18 grains of SR-4759 with 100 grain pistol bullets for case forming loads in my .303 British rifles and the powder was at the base of the neck. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but once the case is approximately 75% full a case filler shouldn't be needed. The best thing about SR-4759 is that normal loads are impossible to double charge.

Been there done that, tried everything from messy cream of wheat to door insulator.
Got a perfect combination on sunny Tuesday, went out on cloudy Thursday, but couldn't duplicate it. nothing worked.
Next Monday, no filler of any kind was the best yet.
This routine has cycled at least three times in my life!

Were you the one who invented puffed rice and puffed wheat during your many life cycles and changed your name from Mathusala.

Sorry I just wanted to pull another senior citizens leg.

if you use any filler in a bottle neck case make sure its something like poly fill or 100% cotton from cotton balls cream of wheat acts as a solid slug under pressure. I use poly fill in my smokeless loads and cotton in my black powder loads

Yes, but they beat me out of the patent!

Thanks for the input guys, the powder is bulky and having not used it before I wanted to be sure. I should have mentioned cotton filler was my original thought not cream of wheat although shooting that stuff is better than eating it LOL Going to load a few with no filler and try them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I read somewhere that Hodgdon was DISCONTINUING SR4759. I hope not, it's been a great powder in a good number of rifles including excellent performance in a 450 Marlin.

I have used a lot of 4759 over the years. Worked well without filler.

Never tried filler with it (have used it with some shotgun powders), so a filler might be better. Never felt a need to find out.

Quote from castbullet site
Just got off the phone with Mike? at Hodgdon Powder Company. I had inquired about the rumor that they were discontinuing IMR SR4759. He stated there is going to be one more run of this powder in 2014.
When I asked if other powders were going to be stopped he said yes.
Here is the list:
SR4759
pyrodex pellets
IMR 7625
IMR 4007
IMR PB
Winchester Supreme 780
Winchester AA Lite

Some of these powers are very flexable (use in several cals--- with different bullet weights -- used in cast and in Jacketed loads)
