Stainless Zastava .375?

You know I have a lot of faith in the 9.3X62, but for elephant? Not this cowboy............I have seen and been several feet from the elephants he is going to be hunting, they are a nasty man hating lot, and if it were me I would be carrying my 470 NE, and my tracker would be carrying my other 470 NE................I personally think he is going to be undergunned as it is with the .375, going to a less powerful cartridge yet just doesn't make any sense to me..........

BUM, lemme guess you know where a good .470 can be found? ;)

In all seriousness, the fellow I'm working for in trade for the hunt has a lot of experience with these elephants and recommends .416 or .458 as you have no PH back up. He also cautions however that the only ammunition you'll find if yours goes missing is .375 solids, and that's what he uses and has had some excitement doing so with. A "Your call." situation, I'll opt for 350gr .375. As Doug points out they have particularly nasty demeanours and don't take kindly to being hunted. Their habitat is problematic for the hunter as well. The 9.3x62 is below what I would call minimum in the conditions.

I have 2/3 of the Ruark battery...416 Rigby and 470NE. To round it out I'd need a 318 WR but they're not exactly festooning the shelves at my local LGS. If it was me going (and forest elephant don't really wind my crank) I'd be carrying both of those rifles. I'd love to brain a bull ele with my 9.3, but the days of suitably gullible elephants are long past, I fear.

yes I agree Doug a 9.3 or 9.5 in those forests make no sense but ammo can be a problem and now that some ex- French African colonies ban the 458 win mag it will be harder to get ammo in that specific caliber.
my late boss there on just the other side of the border and in Zambia was using a 460 wea mag and never wanted to hear about less and he hunted a lot of elephants up to Fort Lamy ...

I haven't read through the entire thread - has anyone mentioned the Kimber Talkeetna? Why not email Kimber with a link to your Ascent write up and see if they will send you a Talkeetna?

You may be on to something, what better rifle to lose than a borrowed one?

It depends who you borrowed it from!

You've got a few trips under your belt, a couple of good articles...the worst they can say is "no".

Well you know who to pm when you want to get rid of your loaner Talkeetna for 25 cents on the dollar, right?:dancingbanana:

...I'm having a really hard time not just cerakoting my double rifle....

Holy crap! I hope that's a joke!!

If you Cerakote it, you might as well see if Butler Creek will make up a plastic stock for it as well...maybe even slap on a couple of parallel muzzle brakes for the finishing touch...:)
