Barrel contour and balance

Hey folks,

I picked up a couple savage actions off the EE last year. One build will be complete when I finally get my manners TA stock (it's been 6months now).

The second is still on paper.

I have several heavy precision/target rifles running 12-15lbs. I'm wanting something a little more comfortable for hunting, but something I can still shoot tacks with at the range.

I'm thinking:

Manners EH-1 stock
Nightforce 20 MOA base
Nightforce UL Rings
Viper PST scope
SAVAGE action

These added up are running just over 6lbs.

The add the barrel.

This is where I have my conundrum. I originally wanted a sendero contour, but the weight is a little much. So now I'm thinking a select shilen light Palma contour finished at 28" chambered in 300RUM with a break added, that will put me in the 4lbs range.

This rifle will no doubt balance terribly, what would you do to fix this up, without messing with to much accuracy off the bench.

I know I'm asking a lot. Maybe I drop down to a magnum sporter contour?

Tks

I don't think this rifle will be comfortable for hunting at all...

too much cartridge and too long.

and if you add about 2 pounds in the butt to make it balance, you have another 12 pound rifle...

Like guntech says, balance means equal weight in front and in back, not the contour. Lose the 28" barrel in favour of a hunting length barrel. Say 24" if you insist on the RUM. Not that the chambering matters much. Even though it is too much cartridge and is unlikely to know what a tack is never mind hit one. A hunting rifle doesn't need that level of accuracy anyway.
A Shilen light Palma is 32"(a lot to take off) and weighs 4.5 pounds all by itself. A hunting barrel it ain't.

You don't know what a tack looks like? Try google images ;) jk

As far as addressing the accuracy, I know hunting rifles don't need excellent accuracy. However, rifles I build that will not maintain </= 1/2 MOA with hand loads gets sold. This will be my fourth, and have not had a problem yet, but usually use varmint contour.

If I'm chopping the barrel down to 24" that kind of defeats the point of an RUM. The barrel will be a bit short to take advantage of the case capacity.

As far as being to much gun. "To much" is thrown around a lot, but some people use 375 h&h for whitetail. So if I want to use my 300RUM for bear or moose hey, that's my choice.

People ask me why I have a 375h&h and I simply say because I can.

This 300RUM will be another moose/bear gun.

Sorry if I come across off ish, I'm a bit tired :)
