Trying out a CADEX DEFENSE CHASSIS

Hello Fellow Gunnutters!

I had the rare opportunity to purchase a Cadex Defence Systems Chassis. It was in the standard flat black (I prefer the Dark Earth), but beggars can't be choosers! LOL!

Upon opening the product box, it was apparent that this isn't your garden variety Chassis system! Visually and physically it is obviously very well designed and built!

I decided to Install my barrelled action from a Rem700, Sendero II in 7mm Rem. Mag. The shiny Stainless really stands out against the flat black of the chassis! I will remedy that soon enough.

The nature of the flat black finish made it hard to get a nice sharp/focused picture from my I-Phone. Hope these pictures give it a good representation of its features.

I took the chassis system out to give it a try, and had some bad fortune! My Leupold 6.5-20X40 VXIII scope failed to adjust the point of impact at all! The internal workings are pooched! AGAIN! This is the second time with this very scope!
Every other Leupold I have had has been switched a hundred times and never failed to work flawlessly! Back to Korth it will go AGAIN!

Upon my returning home, I decided to mount the only other spare scope in my inventory. A Bushnell 3200, 5-15X40 Tactical. I KNOW!....... I KNOW!......., Its a cheap scope to put on a chassis system like this, but these little scopes have seriously surprised me in the past! Until I can get the Leuplod back and upgrade it, this will have to do.

I was sitting back looking at my Chassis with the Bushnell scope and thinking that the flat black would look better with some kind of breakup patterns on it. SOOooooo, I let the idea troll have a run at this one! I decided to attach some camouflage duct tape to see what the chassis would look like if I got it professionally painted in a camouflage pattern like real tree. I went to Home Depot, and grabbed some flat matte duct tap and went at it. This is the stuff.

As I laid the tape loosely onto the rifle, I used a pointed tool (a 180 grain .284 VLD Berger Bullet, LOL!), I pressed the tape tightly into the valleys and machined edges. Kind of ironed/pressed and stretched it into place. It tended to take two or three times pressing it into place to have the tape stay in place. To my surprise, it started to look fairly good! So I continued till the whole rifle was done. So what do you guys think? This is certainly a very cheap and easily changeable way to camouflage a rifle! As long as we can find a decent quality Flat/matte finished tape, your off to the races.

Here is a picture when I was just starting the camouflage job.

I even covered the magazine (just the visible part). Still functions flawlessly.

A few more pictures of various angles to highlight the features of the chassis system.

Sorry in advance about the picture orientation! I am not the best photographer.

A few more pictures to round the views off:

Hope you guys liked the post! Now all I have to do is get back out there and get this system shooting on point of aim and dialed in as far as my optics allow! I can hardly wait!

I will post some results when they come available.

Lookin good DTHunter. Should anyone ever question your redneck status, you can simply pull out your lifetime membership and the $5000 rifle you covered in camo duct tape.

Maybe I'm just picky or an a$$hole but that doesn't look really nice... It looked better before in my opinion. If you want to do something low budget do something like THIS. Sorry just trying to be honest.

Ryan

Well, the duct tape is removeable so if the OP doesn't like it, at least he can change it faster than a repaint. That being said, I agree with you and prefer it in the original black. Not really liking the cam tape. I think the rifle looked fine with the flat black and chrome/polished SS, but to each their own, whatever makes the OP happy I guess.

OP, I don't follow the bit about you preferring it in Dark Earth, but you ended up with a black one? It looks like you purchased your chassis system brand new, so why didn't you order one in FDE/Tan? They're available from Cadex in four different colors so you could have gotten pink if you wanted to.

Also, a tip about photographing a black rifle, sometimes a darker background (doesn't have to be black, but darker is probably better) will help your camera focus a bit easier. Having a white background contrasting a black subject will actually hide a lot of features into one dark shadow.

lol this is funny... But yea if you want to put tape on a Cadex precision set up at least use the camo wrap tape. Tape on a 2000$ chassis ? I mean come on man!

;)

ha!Ha! a red neck I am! LOL!
I am just experimenting on what type or pattern I want to go with. When I decide, I will get it done properly/professionally.

Your honesty is appreciated! LOL! I am just playing around for now. I can put the rifle back to black in about 5 minutes, so its certainly no harm!

Thanks for the photography tips! I can use those!
The thing with the colour preference was that I wasn't willing to wait 7-8 weeks for the Tan chassis. The Cadex company was /is shut down for a couple of weeks, and they didn't have any TAN/dark earth on hand at the moment. As far as colour goes, I only "prefer" the tan colour, don't feel like its a big deal.

Ah, I see. Tan looks really good, but black looks nice too. There are a couple of threads on photography floating around here, all with really great tips.

Are you planning on getting your chassis hydro-dipped or custom paint? I guess you're thinking of hunting with it?

Mr.donut:

After seeing the lolks of the realtree on my chassis, I may get it hydro dipped. Its a really comfortable chassis system.

I went out shooting it last evening and was SUPER happy with it! The only downer to the evening was that my chrony didnt read any of my velocities. Good thing I recorded my velocities from a previous shooting session!

This is a 3-1/4" three shot group at 600.

And this is the second group at 600 using the same load about 1/2 hour later with no direct sunlight. Just a little fine tuning and I will be off to the races!

So far this Chassis is shooting just fine! I am quite excited about its potential!
