I have an A2 front sight and I have no idea how it secures to the barrel. It came with taper pins but there are no holes for them.

That's because you make the holes with a drill and tapered reamer with the front sight installed on the barrel. That way the holes line up perfectly and the pins secure the sight to the barrel.

Thanks. Makes perfect sense to me now. As you may have guessed this is the first time I've built this sort of thing.

Unless you already have, are going to buy, or build, a jig to hold the front sight assembly perfectly straight while you drill and ream the holes through both the front sight and barrel, you will in all likelihood end up with issues that at the very least will result in a canted front sight, and at worst require a new barrel and front sight assembly. If this is your first build, and you are not a machinist/mechanic/etc. you should probably either get someone to do it for you, or change your build plan.

Regards.

yep, without a jig and the proper tools, that is not going to work out well.....
Wolverine has clamp on A2 FSB's.
You can also get a YHM folding clamp on FSB

Thanks I'll have a look for the clamp on ones. I didn't see any when on wolverines site when I ordered mine, I'll look again.

I did a similar thing when I built my AR. I didn't realize that the barrel needed a channels cut into it for the taper pins. Being somewhat stubborn and wanting to finish the build that day, I ended up tapping the A2 front sight post for 5x Set Screws (4 on the sides, 1 on the underside). If I recall correctly, tapped it for 8-32, and its secure enough that I can carry the rifle by the front sight if I feel like it.
