I'm back and forth on my next gun. One minute it's a .357 revolver and the next a 1911. Budget is in the 8-900 range plus or minus a bit (+HST).

If I was to look at 1911's that would seem to mean higher trim Para's (like the Elite), Remington R1 enhanced, an entry level Kimber, a Rugar SR1911 (although the Rugar is one of the few guns that "The Truth About Guns" lambasted in their review and gave 1 star) or maybe an entry level STI. Am I missing anything?

Recommendations?......opinions?

Or..............

Would I be better to put the money in something like a S&W 586 (Epps has new ones for $793) and wait until I was in a position to spent more on a 1911?

I like the Remington R1 Plain not enhanced. Looks like an old 1911 with a stainless match barrel. Nice mix of old an new. I would go for the 586 first

Where are you seeing that 1 star review for the SR1911? I see a 4 star review on TTAG. I've got an SR1911, and I'd be hard pressed to find anything I don't like about it.

I also have a GP100, and it's fantastic.

Get the .357. I love my 586, bought used for $600. Then get yourself a 1911. I have the Rem R1, not the enhanced, I like the classic look and feel. However, the mags suck, so budget for some decent ones.

You're right. I stand corrected. I don't know where I got that. Either it was a bad review of the Rugar somewhere else or a bad review of another gun I read right after reading the Rugar one. Either way, thanks for the correction

Look at EE and be patient. Most of the moderately priced 1911 today aren't exactly the quality pieces.
You can find a decent, older Colt within your price range once in a while. Good luck.
However if you are after .357 forget about the modern MIM loaded wheelguns from S&W.
Older model 19, 66 or 27 would be my recommendation.

i have a STI trojan 9mm listed... with 3 magazines... will give it to you for $900.... has bomar adjustable nightsights as well as the factory bomar adjustables included. shipped.

fits your budget and gets you shooting.... with a quality gun.

Thanks but I'm kinda thinking I'd want my 1911 in .45

i have a nice ruger sr1911 package in the same add... includes holster and mag pouch... less then 50 rounds thru the gun.

Listen to the Fox about reloading as shooting 45acp is going to get pricey in a hurry if you shoot it a lot. :p

I wouldn't hesitate on a Ruger SR1911. Irunguns has the Springfield Range Officer for $899.USD, a little above your price range. Freedom Ventures has the STI Spartan.

The 1911 purist will start chirping about avoiding the series 80 models which have a few extra safety parts which really isn't needed IMHO. I can't tell the diff when shooting between a series 70 and an 80.

STI Spartan in 9mm or .45 ACP

SAM in 9mm or .45 ACP

Ruger SR1911 .45 ACP

Those would be my choices for a moderately priced 1911.

Sig 1911's look good... non railed ones. I'm in the market for a .45 as well and that's where I'm leaning (either a 1911 or a P220) more to just have, and shoot infrequently compared to my 9's to keep costs down.

Questar has the XO for under 1k. Tempting, but I read it needs some trigger work... ?

Remington is a series 80 so forget that......

I believe that the Remington disengages the Series 80 safety with the grip safety instead of the trigger. Either way, it's a fine shooter and I like it for the money. Usually around $550 used for the classic A1-style model.
