STI Trojan in .40 S&W. Who has one?

So, I been thinking of picking up a STI Trojan in .40 S&W to compete in classic division (major). I already own a Trojan in 9mm with 4000 rounds down the barrel and the pistol has been rock solid reliable to date. I'm hoping to hear the .40 cal is just as reliable. Who has one and any reliability issues with the .40 S&W cartridge?

Rock Island Armory (Armscor) makes a 1911 .40 cal as well. SAM's in .40 I've been told to run away from regardless of the price! The only other .40 cal in my price range is Dlask Arms. Opinions by people with first hand knowledge would be appreciated. As for the .45 ACP cartridge, the ammo is just too costly :sok2 .
 
The fellow I know who has one had to send the barrel off to Dawson Precision to get the ramp modified due to feeding issues.
 
I shoot classic with a Trojan in .40. I have had zero problems with it since I got. Has a 1.8lb trigger (warp speed kit) and very accurate. Recoil is very manageable.

I did shoot minor but have moved to major. The STI mags work fine but also have Tripp Research 9 and 10 round mags - again no issues. Using a 180 grain Campro bullet with between 4.0 (minor) and 5.0 (major) grains of N320.

Ironically I am going the opposite of you and just bought a 9mm Spartan for 3Gun matches.

Good to hear about your Trojan .40 cal. I've been using Tripp magazines in my Trojan 9mm. The pistol/magazine combination has been very reliable.
 
I owned a Trojan in .40.
Beautiful,accurate pistol.
I had my smith lighten the trigger to 2 1/2 lbs.
The parts in the Trojan are top notch.
I loaded my rounds long.
Can,t remember OAL.
Used Wilson 47D mags.
That pistol ran flawlessly.

It appears a longer than factory OAL seems to correct most feeding issues. Reliability with factory rounds are hit & miss (no pun intended) from what I have learned so far.
 
Well, those that know me know I've competed in all pf and loads in IPSC Classic....lol.
I started with a Trojan 40. Nothing wrong with the pistol at all.
I ended up moving to the opposite sides of the spectrum. I run a 9mm for Minor, and a 45 for Major. I simply found running minor 40 to be problematic and less than 99% reliable.
I know this means 2 pistols, but I'd rather bleed once, cry once. If using 40 for Major only Classic, thats fine, especially if you run a similar/same load 2011 for Standard.
I had zero issues once I had the OAL figured out for my particular Trojan.

I don't reload for a number of reasons so it appears I will be staying in minor classic or going back to production. Thanks for all of the replies.
 
My Trojan had a very short initial break-in period - probably less than 200 rounds if I recall. After that I have had no problems what so ever with ammo. This includes shooting Wolf ammo (remanufactured) and my reloads. For reloads, i have shot both major (current) and minor. No issues eitherway.

Note that I am loading to pretty much factory length as my Tripp 10 round mags were the factory length and not the longer OAL version. Since I have switched to major, I have kept the same OAL as I had for minor as I am lazy and did not want to bother changing the dies.
 
Stonehorse - just thinking about something else... If you don't reload then you are likely going to be stuck with major ammo for .40. I don't know of any manufacturer that is downloaded below the 170 pf. There might be some out there but the Wolf stuff should meet major no problem out of a 5" barrel. So if not reloading then it really boils down to whether you want to shoot 10 round or 8 round mags.

Custom Reloading Service here in BC reloads the .40 S&W in both major & minor power factors. The cartridge OAL is the same as factory new ammo. Custom can't/won't change the cartridge OAL from the industry standard.

there is something to be said for .45 for major, I know I would shoot it except for the economics of brass. .40 brass is basically free (especially if LEOs frequent your range) where as .45 not so much, and you have to chase brass at a match, which for me ruins my day faster than anything else. it is more reliable though, if there wasnt the brass to consider I would be shooting .45 instead of .40 for sure
