Was this a good buy ? (Pre 64 winchester)

Are you happy with what you paid and happy with the rifle? Unless you're buying for reselling and making $$ then it was a bit stiff but if you are planning on keeping and shooting the rifle for years to come then as long as you are satisfied that's all that counts. Have you priced out a new one lately? And yes they do make them again. They are being made at the same plant as Browning in Japan and sold under the Winchester name. They are a bit over $1000 new so I would say you did fine for an original pre-64 that looks to be in nice shape.
 
It's better to spend a wee bit more than not and appreciate the condition of your purchase.
Cheeping out can present one with a whole new can of worms.
At the end of the game, things should average out.

Go enjoy your cared for new shooter.

The proper format would have been to ask opinions on what it might be worth.

As almost stated by one subscriber: "You should have put that money into a better camera".

Don't worry about it. Enjoy it now and when it goes through the family into your will it will be enjoyed by the next generation.

It is a case of mind over matter . . . if you don't mind it don't matter!
 
If you bought it in Canada you over paid by about $100, if you bought it in the USA you got a deal, south of the border they are going for a pretty penny! Not to worry these Winchesters will only increase in value over time.
 
Who cares? You bought it for yourself and planning to keep it for life. I much prefer to slightly overpay and get what I want instead of going cheaper and compromise. Is even $200 such a big deal in the great scheme of things? I don't think so...after all it's not like they still make them that way. Congratulations!

I see post 64's for sale on the EE for the same prices as pre 64's are going for. We all know they aren't 10% the gun the pre 64's were.

I wonder what they are worth? $200?

But the sellers won't ever accept that...

When I refer to post 64, I mean the sintered metal receiver, low quality stamped metal parts guns, made before about 1980 or so when the AE and XTR came out.
They're pretty much Kryptonite to anyone who knows the facts...

Yes, the guns produced in the late 70's and on were much improved, back to forged receivers and machined parts.

What is a Post 64 94 worth? (no, not buying one)

Fair enough, there's quite a range of quality produced and assumed we were talking current in stores stuff.
 
The 94 went out of production for a while and came back as Miroku (made in Japan). Better quality I think and nicer finished too but more expensive. So now guys selling the old guns often use the pricing for new versions for pricing which is not really proper. All of a sudden an old gun is worth a couple hun more? I think you got reamed too but could be an honest mistake. Maybe the seller didnt know this. You could have ended up with a POS too but it looks to be in pretty nice shape. Its in nice enough shape that you should be able to get your money back out of it if you decide not to keep it.

Not too much at all. A nice pre-64 94will be appreciated for generations to come. Deaner and I sell every 94 we get our hands on, pre- and post-, even the ones that have "character". Unless the price is way high, you got to be quick to snag the nicer ones at gun shows here on the Prairies.
 
How can one tell if these older rifles have been reblued or does it matter from a price point?
