Having a Crack at Buffalo soon. Update- Its On! PIC HEAVY pg6

I had a 200gr TSX expand to .590 this evening while shot into a Redgum tree, its dead an real solid.... more solid than a buffalo id rekon!!

should do the job?

WL, if you're hunting for one single good bull as opposed to culling or meat hunting, I'd be very highly inclined to use a 275 gn bullet in 35 cal. I think both Swift and Woodleigh make them. You're going to want to work in close and have a real good look at him so you shouldn't be handicapped with the heavy bullet, and you will see a lot more energy transfer and tissue disruption with a good heavy lead core soft point bullet than you will with the 200 gn TSX. I have used a lot of 270 TSX in my 375 H&H and killed a lot of game with it and I can tell you they leave a rather small wound channel and punch right through with little damage on soft tissue. They have worked without exception in the H&H though, but I would go at least 250 gn, if possible. If they do not follow the rules of SD as some people say, they most certainly do follow the physics of momentum, the heavier bullet at lower velocity will penetrate deeper than a lighter higher velocity bullet of the same construction. Buffalo are very dense and tough animals and I personally wouldn't want to face down a cranky old bull or a wounded one with a 200 gn bullet........JMHO.

The 200 grain TSX is a good choice, but shooting trees with softs will teach you more or less nothing about what the same bullet will do on game.

Yep that's understandable, The tree was merely in the wrong spot at the wrong time for testing poi with the 3 loads I have!

There is no more Preparation I can do.... The Plane takes off Tomorrow at 9pm from Melbourne!!!!!!!

Hawkeye 35 Whelen in Tow! and the mate is taking the 325wsm Abolt, Will be plenty photos on Return!

WL

Guys, Im up in the Arnhem community, since getting off the Plane we went straight up the river in search of Barra! Tick
That evening we scouted for some pigs but no luck

2nd Day I got my chance at a Bull, 3rd Day we met up with the Locals and they gave us a grande tour of their land, I handed the guys my Whelen an they went After some Buffalo outback style and got themselves a Cow for meat!

So many photos! There is Buffalo on every Floodplain, sometimes up to 30 of them! we have seen a couple of Stonkers with great Horns but the Floodplain isn't an Easy hunt with a .35Whelen !!!
I want to stalk them in the Trees preferably so that's now the Aim, the mate just wanted me to secure a Buffalo!

We are now trying to get onto some Pigs and upgrade on the Buff, which is a 100SCI ;)

Still 5 days left of this awesome time in the NT!

Stay tuned, when I return I will create a new thread for you guys to check out my adventure!

Cheers

Sweet! How much did you have to pay Dave Chappelle to guide for you? ;)

Very cool hunt - I wouldn't have thought Oz would be a hunting destination... looks like Africa!
