Smokin' gun

Was at the range tonight, when I was shooting my .22 SA Chiappa revolver, it was quite smoky. At first I figured extra oil, but after a couple of boxes, same thing. Tried two brands of ammo, same thing. My ammo was shooting clean in my buddies MK II, so it definitely the gun. Took it apart, all looked good, function was fine. Any ideas? I don't seem to recall it doing this previously??

It's 22LR, they smoke sometimes, nothing to worry about. Could be the gun, the ammo, the temperature, humidity, take your pick.

Some guns seem to smoke more than others, there was a fella at the range last week who's 357 smoked liked crazy, Its probably the type of powder he had.

Rem golden bullets and lead nosed Blazer

I'd try a coated bullet like CCI minimags (coated) to see if there is any difference

I noticed certain .22 ammo is very smokey . remington bucket o bullets smoke the most.

i know reloads will smoke a lot from the exposed lead burning, try shooting a .22 LR TMJ (Total Metal Jacket)

With regards to lead bullets, it's not the lead that smokes, it's the wax used to lubricate the bullet that smokes.

+1 That's what I found with my 38 Wadcutters , used plated pullets much less smoke now

- if you think Bucket o' Bullets is smoky, try Thunderbolts - on second thought, don't try them; they lead...

I suspect I know what's wrong; your flash gap is a trifle too generous. The rounds need to generate enough pressure to burn-out the powder; if they don't, the powder doesn't ignite consistently and smokes a lot. A revolver is going to be bad for this because of the flash gap letting the burning powder charge vent to the outside and lose pressure while the bullet is still travelling up the barrel.

You could verify this by chronographing a couple rounds from your revolver versus your buddy's pistol; if there's much of a velocity difference, that's probably what's going-on. What to do about it - sorry; no idea...
