The only difference between the two is the pencil barrels and the very slim front end with the keymod other than that they are the same gun so if your not concerned with weight get what ever one tickles ya

that's what I was thinking, I just recall some people on here saying, there was some upgrades done on the model before the keymode. Just not sure what year and model though.

That's not the only change. There is also a new bolt and buffer. And the lower is different. You can't take an old lower and put a keymod upper on it.

The reason I'm asking is, a local dealer has a last yrs model and he will sell it to me for$2150. And I sometimes like to support local ( if the price is right) :)

I have last year's model L. Shoots fine, handles well. The ONLY problem I have is it is F#%king heavy! With a single point sling, after a few hours, feels like your neck has shifted 2 inches! I now shoot my Tavor more due to the balance. The Keymod version, from what I hear is waaaay lighter. People who own one say it feels like a completely different rifle. If and when I can get my hands on one, I may upgrade mine to the Keymod. The Robarms would be the most skookum NR rifle if it weighed like an AR!! And the Keymod version may be it!
So is ~ 2lbs worth the difference in $? That's up to you. My advice is to get your hands on both and handle them with a sling for a few hours if you can. That should make up your mind.

Brianma65, you said aren't concerned with the weight? Try holding both in comparison. As many have stated online, it feels like a different rifle. I ordered from Wolverine because the 7.62x39 Keymod is unobtainium locally and they were one of the few vendors who actually understand the product they are selling and supporting.

A couple local stores have XCRs in stock that are "new" and have clearly been handled too much to be sold as such. For the amount retailers are charging for the firearm hold both versions first and stretch the budget for an actual new one.

By the way, ordering through Wolverine was painless and easy. At the risk of sounding like a shill I wholeheartedly recommend them.

I'm in small town NL, so finding the XCR is difficult enough , handling the keymode is next to impossible. I've handled The last yrs model , in store only and it feels ok , it has a thick barrel also , I'm more concerned that it has all the upgrades. I may even be able to get it a little cheaper still, if were only talking a couple pounds , that's not so bad , I do most of my plinking out behind my house so I don't have far to walk, maybe 4or5 hundred yards . But the upgrades are important.

My Keymod came with Troy flip up sights vs MI sights. Resale value will be more on the keymod. So if you pay more most likely you will get more if you decide to sell it later on and get to enjoy the upgrades.

But chances are if you get a keymod version you well end up keeping it for a long time. :)

The 2 stage trigger on the Keymod feels comparable to my KAC one and the balance is way better on the new ones.

Personally if I was to buy an xcr it would be the keymod or nothing. I'm assuming they won't make parts for the old style bolts for much longer. But no matter what xcr you buy wolverine will take care of you should you ever need any parts.

Ok then , I've been thinking long and hard on this, and I think I should go with the keymode with thick barrel . Just one more question if you guys don't mind. I kinda understand how a 2 stage trigger works but can you explain it for me? Does it maximize accuracy and does it interfere with mag dumps?

well I've just googled two stage triggers, and I've found the answers. I think I will spend the few hundred and get the key mode with heavy barrel. Then I know for sure it has all the upgrades. Plus I can use it for hunting big game when I get the 308 barrel. Thanks for all the replies.

If you're getting an xcr-l. you won't be able to get a .308 conversion kit. You'd be able to get .223, 7.62x39, 6.8, and I've heard rumours of .300 blackout (don't know for sure about that). If you want .308 you'd need to get the xcr-m

I'm no hunter, but I've seen people here (I think it was "CampCook"?) take a deer with a 6.8 conversion. So that might be your best bet.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

yes it's new, it's been on the shelf almost a year. $2150 + %13 hst = $2430 all in. Still sound like a good deal?

If you like the rifle, it's a good deal.
My own is last years model, 2 stage trigger that I really like the feel of, heavy barrel and rails. Lots of frikin rails...

Bottom line, if you're buying it to use, it's great value. If you're buying to re-sell, maybe buy the hype and go keymod. ;)

Side note per your last post (18), keymod with heavy barrel, is still a heavy rifle. The weight is in the barrel, not the rails.
