Just got a new XCR-L keymod 7.62x39 heavy barrel and have a couple questions that i could not find answers to yet. First off there seems to be alot of different opinions/suggestions on how to break it in. Manual says setting 4 for 40 rds but i have heard start at setting 1 and leave it also so need some advise. Ammo used will be non corrosive bulk ammo. Other thing was alot of mixed reviews on the 10rd pistol mags being junk. The mags came from wolverine so im sure there the newest ones out there but want to know if i should be expecting issues and if there is a fix if issues do occur. Rifle looks and feels amazing and cant wait to shoot it but want to ease my mind first. Thanks fo any input.

best way to determine if the mags work is to shoot the thing. first time out with my XCR i had my cheap .223 mags fail on me. switched the other mags i had and had no trouble.
try setting it at 4 and shooting it for 40 rounds, if it works turn the gas down. You won't hurt or harm your rifle. if you leave your gas system too high (4) too long you will chew through rubber bumpers. At gas setting 4 you will experience trigger slap. this goes away after you turn your gas system down.

you'll drive yourself nuts reading stuff on the Internet without any first hand experience. go out and enjoy your awesome new rifle!

Makes no sense to break it in on setting 1, it may not even cycle. Follow the manual... the people who built the rifle may know what they're talking about.

After a few mags if you find its kicking brass to the moon, drop the setting down until the ejected casings are flying out 7-10' or so.

I broke my 6.8 in with a few rounds at 4, then started working down the gas setting. After 40 rounds I was running it on S. I suggest playing with it and running it at the setting that reliably cycles the action.

Run it at the lowest setting that it cycles reliably on. Periodically turn it down a notch to see if it will run at a lower setting as it breaks in. Also, run her wet. The break in guide in the manual may work for some rifles but you might find yourself needing a new buffer sooner rather than later breaking in this way.

I ran mine just as the manual says. Gas setting 4 for 40 rounds very wet. Then i turned it to one. Wasnt throwing shells the suggested 9-15ft so i set it on 2 and shes ran flawless since. Im at roughly 700 rounds and my buffer is still like new. I still run it wet.

Non corrosive bulk you say? Are you sure? Id still clean it as if it were. Only non corrosive ammo id trust is hunting rounds.

That tells me your gas ports are wildly out of spec, or you're running some insanely hot ammo.

With Remington ammo I need to turn it up to 1 to get good clean ejections. With Hornady and S&B it runs fine on S. I'm not terribly concerned about whether or not the ports are in or out of spec, I care that the rifle functions reliably all the time. The main point I was trying to make though is run the rifle at the lowest setting it will reliably function on to avoid excessive wear and tear.

I had the same questions as you. I have the same gun except in the light barrel configuration. I ran mine really wet. Put a 100 rounds through it on the first outing (not much time to shoot before dark). I ran it on gas setting 1 the whole time. No issues at all it cycled and every round went bang. I am running 10 round pistol mags no issues at all with them. Had them fully loaded to 10 rounds no seating problems at all. I am also running bulk non corrosive took it all apart and cleaned it after. Barrel was fairly dirty but that's about it. My shirt had a lot of oil spray from running it wet :) make sure you wear some old clothes haha and enjoy! I can't wait to go out again with this great rifle.

Well after about 40 rds at setting 4 i tried it on 1 but it was ejecting maybe 1-2ft so i turned it up to 2 and it seems to be perfect for now!! The mags on the other hand are terrible and i had several dbl feeds that made the day a bit annoying but maybe they will break in a bit after some use. Overall love the rifle and need to get out asap to shoot some more!! Still havent cleaned it so im hoping the the so called non corrosive i shot was ok :)
