Hi all, thinking about what to put on a 7mm-08 BLR for optics, I'll be hunting in mostly bush with the possibility of a couple of hundred yards in a clear cut. I'm tending towards what I know from past experience, Leupold 1.5x5, or Bushnell 2x7 3200, etc.

But my question is really about other options, specifically red dots, aim points, etc. I have absolutely no experience with this form of sighting device, and don't know if there is something in that group that could do the same job for me with perhaps less weight, better low light function, etc.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Jim

I have a Bushnell 2x7 3200 and love it, but you cant go wrong with a 2-10x50 or 3-9x50 for this type of rifle. I wouldn't accept anything less. Much more light gathering and much more field of view. Also more versatile scope. My 2 cents.

I'm thinking about mounting a Burris FastFire II/III on my BLR. If I don't go that route, I'll go with an old El Paso Weaver K1 or K4.

I'm using a picatinny rail to mount the optics.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking, 'cept I'm pissed I sold 2 of them a year ago!! Thinking that I should clean up a little, argggg.

There is a Vortex 1-6x33 on the exchange just now, with a 160' field of view at 1x it would be quite the lens! Problem is it weighs almost 2lbs...naw, the real problem is it's listed at over $1600.00.... Yikes!

Oh well, sumpin will come along, like a lite 2x7 in one brand or another:)

Leupold 1.5x5 heavy duplex
This or a compact 2x7 would be perfect. A small handy rifle deserves a small handy scope in order to keep the overall package small and handy. Pretty simple.

I would not put 2-10x50 or 3-9x50 or any other large scope on that rifle. Doesn't make sense and looks stoopid to boot.

I'm with SuperCub. I think we've all fallen for those big, high power scopes with their beautiful optics - I know I have fallen under their spell on occasion and own a few. But the truth is, when I snap back to reality I realize that there are far better choices for normal hunting. The Leupold VX2 2-7 and VX3 2.5-8 are compact, light, rugged, have great optics and would be my choices for a rifle like yours. I have several of them mounted on rifles from 7x57 to .338 mag. The truth is that for 98% of more of the hunters out there (including myself), if you can't see it well enough with 7-8 power to make a well-placed shot, you probably shouldn't be shooting at it in the first place. For that matter, a 4x fixed power would probably do everything a person needs to do and they're cheaper and plenty rugged.

2-7 or compact/ultra light 3-9.
What colour of box is fairly insignificant, if the end cost is around 50% or better of the new purchase price of the rifle.
Don't cheap out on your rings and bases either.

Leupold 2-7 compact.
