Hi All,

I have a Remington Peerless O/U that has performed flawlessly for many years.

Recently though the action will open when the top barrel is fired.

Anyone any clues on this?

Thanks in anticipation.

Step one is to take it apart and clean it. Built up crud is the cause of many problems. Crud is one of those technical terms related only to guns! I just did a 1960's 960 that had never been stripped for cleaning, it now works like a new gun.

The lever feel any weaker ?
Id say give it a cleaning. Thats always first with guns acting funny.

Can you change the gun to discharge the bottom barrel first? Try that after the cleaning then the top see if it pops open.
After that there are a multitude of things id be checking in the shop. Lever spring, the locking blocks, and a few other things.

The lever doesn't feel any weaker to me but it could have been weakening over time.

I cleaned the action in an Ultrasonic Cleaner and lubed the action as per the Remington Manual last week but still no change.

The gun has a Selector switch combined with the Safety. If I choose the lower barrel to shoot first, the gun stays locked up.

Cheers

Is the gun still tight on face? Specifically, with the action closed, can you get the action to open slightly by manipulation of the barrels and forestock?

Well - The opening torque is much greater when the upper barrel is fired, regardless of firing sequence. In some shotguns you can check if the hinge lock plate has bottomed out - this is more definitive than looking at the position of the lever. (ie on any given shotgun, the lever can be slightly left or right of centre, and be bottomed out, thus giving rise to a poor lock.)

Thanks for all the replies. My buddy owns the same shotgun and after checking out the amount of "spring tension" in the top lever it appears that the Lever Springs are in need of replacing. I struggled finding them, there is an inner and outer spring, but eventually managed to acquire them from Numrich in the US.

Today I have started to disassemble the action but unfortunately I am only armed with a parts diagram from the internet. I proceeded VERY cautiously taking many pics of the disassembly. I am now at a standstill as I cannot see a way to remove the Top Lever from the rest of the action.

If any of you guys have any tips or clues as to how to remove the Top Lever, I would be more than happy to hear them.

Thanks again guys for your help so far.
