Norinco M305: 22" or 18.5"

They balance and point well with either barrel. As someone who enjoyed carrying my M1 Garand in the bush I think the M14 is a cool and suited hunting rifle.

For hunting and bush carry you might also want to go with a 5 round short mag instead of the 20/5 neutered mag. The balance point to carry this rifle is exactly right on the magazine. Also, for many hunters, the large magazine that sticks out catches on absolutely everything.

I realize I'm a newbie to these types of questions so pardon my stupidity if it makes an appearance. Would there be anyway to make it into a better hunting rifle?

There's not much that will make an M305 lighter. The scope mounts from m14.ca look pretty good if you want to put glass on your rifle. A good sling will help a lot.

The point is that although you can hunt with it if you're determined, the M305/M14 isn't a hunting rifle. For hunting, it's pretty tough to beat a bolt action rifle.

unless you're a lefty- then the bolt unless its a dedicated bolt is almost useless; I live in the same neck of the woods as you tengoo and I've used a savage 99 in 308 for years- we're all assuming the op is a spot and stalker- ie a walker- but there is one form of hunting the m14 is superb at; the multiple shot AMBUSH hunt- or "hotspot " hunting- like I said somewhere you have time to set up and the gam e moves past you

ok, I've been around long enough to set a few things straight- the m14 stripped, no magazine, NO STOCK, just the barrel and action weighs roughly 9.5/10 pounds...

I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers from. My two shorties weigh in at 9.61 and 9.53 lbs respectively wearing Italian walnut stocks, nylon slings, loaded 5-round magazines but no cleaning kit in the butt stock. My 22" wearing a bedded Chinese plastic stock that I added two bags of fishing weights and a couple of sticks of epoxy putty to for balance, a nylon sling, a loaded 5-round magazine, a CASM II aluminum rail, Burris zee standard low rings and a Bushnell 10x40 scope weighs 11.40 lbs with no cleaning kit, rear sight, stripper clip charging guide and front sight post or bayonet lug.

they all have problem. The shorty had more of them at once because they were rushed during the procession phase. If you can, find a Polytechnologies version. They had less issued, not by much, but still less. They all have that crappy parkerized finish, so keep it clean of finger oil, or it will rust. Yes, shorty is handy, but unless you intend to do CQB racing, you wont gain anything from it. Just go long.

Again, spearing from my experience, may differ.

Yeah I like the compactness I just don't like pulling the damn things out! Its always a wretched fight :) I might use it for hunting but will probably stick with the 5/20s.

Shorter barrel inherently more accurate at medium ranges. U will lose some MV which will reduce effective kill range. Longer barrel inherently less accurate but good out to longer ranges. Your mileage may vary. U will have to decide what U want to do with it. Brush gun and medium range shooter, or long range in open country like cut blocks, choppens and such. Lots of shooters like the shorter barrel. I can not speak to quality of the shorter barrels as mime is a 22 incher.

Correct, however if yur road hunting the 20 round pinned mag goes in much much faster when ya get out of yur truck and throw down on a shooter bear.
