If I know the serial # of a gun that is for sale, how can I check or who can I call to find out how many people have owned the gun? Thanks

You can't. The RCMP will not divulge that information.

Or, at least they won't admit to having that information.

When the registry was active, I did discover where a formerly owned rifle of mine was located. I sent in a bulk Privacy Act request for everything they had bearing my name. The redactor was a little tired by the end of the file, and failed to cancel out an address. The whole business of government information is worth taking seriously. When in doubt, always ask. There are stories circulating of people who were once investigated or questioned by the police, discovering their names on databases years after the fact. Getting their files purged has been a major effort because most forces are extremely reluctant to press delete on any files.

Why would it matter how many people have owned it? As long as it isn't stolen, and shoots as advertised all should be good.
It matters to me. It is one way to check the honesty of the seller before I hand over a grand to someone I don't even know on the other side of the country on the hope that they don't stiff me which they could easily do. Get it.

If it worries you that much, buy new. That way you know the history of the piece. This may not work if you're looking for an older or discontinued gun.

However, I have traded/bought several firearms on the EE and haven't had any major issues. Sure, there have been a couple little things that could have been better, but I can blame myself for not knowing the right questions to ask.

What's the sellers trader rating? Is it higher then your ZERO??

It is zero with only 1 post, joined in 2011. Can see why I'm a little cautious. And how can a buyer rip off a seller? I have to give the money and hope I get the gun.

A buyer can annoy the living #### out of the seller....especially noob ones. Personally I don't buy off anyone that hasn't been on the board for a looooong time, preferably showing 2004 as a join date. Usually there are very few deals on the EE, just tons of overpriced #### usually priced higher then new.
If this $1000 gun is a deal, then probably a scam....move on, find another one, or buy new.
