Try both before buying. I fell in love with the 226 (9mm) on paper. Spec-wise, it is amazing. So I bought one several years ago, and discovered I couldn't shoot it accurately to save my life. After more than a year and almost a thousand rounds, I sold it.
My current go-to 9mm is a vanilla M&P. Yes, the trigger is squishy, but the ergo's cant be beat. I shoot this gun incredibly well, and it will eat any ammo I feed it including my cast lead reloads. My M&P has been rock-solid dependable.
Another thing to consider is cost. M&P range kits go for under $700 new. I've seen them as low as $450 on the EE. Compare this to a 226, which starts at over $1,000 new and heads higher very quickly.
