Hello everyone,

I wanted to know the opinion of CGNers on the first rimfire I should get. Im hopefully getting a PAL soon and I'm considering either the Marlin 795 or Ruger 10/22. Is the Ruger truly worth the extra hundred dollars? I know the customization on the Ruger is enticing, but does the Marlin suffice?

Thanks all!

If you want to buy a rifle, then change it into a different rifle to make it better , then buy the ruger. Otherwise buy the marlin as it's lighter , cheaper and more accurate right out of the box.

I have both the 795 and 10/22 takedown.... Personally I like 795 for eating any round it gets, my 10/22 is a bit fussy when it comes to ammo. I like the portability of my Ruger as it is a takedown.
For what my opinion is worth you won't go wrong with either one. I was nailing tacks at 25yds with the 795, can't say that about the ruger but in defence I have only used a red dot with it.

Both are excellent rifles, the Ruger has a lot more accessories available and options for customizing but that plain old Marlin still works fine too!

If you like to modify it get a 10/22 if thou want a light accurate rifle out of the box the 795. I have a model 60 (its just a tube fed 795) and it shoots very very well. All for $180. I won't buy a 10/22 again. The one I had and the others I have seen recently are not that great of shooters.

795 is wicked accurate right out of the box and chews through all types of ammo that i have come across.

I do have a few complaints about it though:

- No comfortable aftermarket stocks,
- a very heavy trigger pull. I think mine is around 8lbs,
- very little for upgrades available.

Boyds has some nice stocks.
I put a dip trigger guard and trigger on my m60. Makes the trigger feel so much better. There is no pre travel and no over travel now. Feels like its a lot lighter now as well. Plus its aluminium not plastic.

Ya and you can get custom options as well on the boyds stocks now so long as they are under $500 before shipping and are not the tacticool version.

do you have a Boyd's installed? I've been looking at the Varmint Thumbhole stock in salt & pepper or blue. would like to get some feedback on them.

How much does the dip trigger run for here in Canada?

I have had many boyds stocks. Don't have one on my marlin as it came with a laminate stock already new. They are very good quality. I really like em. Easy to instal and comfy to hold.

You can't get the trigger guard up here have to order from the usa.

I have both and will keep both.

10/22 great. No limit to customizing options. Easy mag loading with such systems as the HC3R kit. Out of the box the 10/22 is good, and can be tweaked into a tack driver (although I haven't done this).
I would buy it again.

795 is great too out of the box. Cheaper price. Reliable 100%.
You can get some trigger work done to make it better, but it is still ok as is and fun too shoot. My trigger is still stock. I would buy it again.
To go http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=217 for trigger info. There is a fellow on the board who does it and does ship to Canada.

Both rifles will benefit from better sights. I have Tech Sights on both and it is way better than the factory sights.
First rifle, get the 795 and get out there shooting. You'll have loads of fun with it as is.
Upgrade sights later as funds permit and then you'll like it even more.

Eventually you'll get a 10/22 too. Both rifles are A+ when starting into 22lr and both are good choices.

I have a 10/22 and a marlin 60 (tube fed version), and the marlin has a problem with shaving bullets consistently ... After shooting about 100-200 rounds, I can shake the rifle with the action open and all kinds of bullet shavings comes out. 10/22 has been great.

795 hands down.

I've had both, and won't buy another 10/22. I did get a chance to shoot a take-down a few weeks ago, and no...the 10/22s still don't do it for me. The 795 is an econo gun with mediocre sights and a stiff mag release....but both rifles have heavy triggers. The 795 is more accurate, lighter, great/cheap 10 round mags, last shot bolt hold open, bolt release, adult-sized charging handle, etc. etc. I've toyed with the Boyd's stock, but I love the light carry weight of the synthetic stock and the geometry works well for scope use.

Yup 795 all the way.

Probably one of the best bang for your buck firearms out there. Very accurate and just as reliable. As far as customazatition goes, nothing a little paint and some add-ons can't solve (eBay special)

Here is mine:

Custom OD green paint with webbing, eBay bipod, Simons 3-9 scope, and 30-round promag magazine.

Wow that Marlin is smoking. I was actually looking for the 30-round promag in Canada. Does any other store besides hical carry it? Just because its a bit on the expensive side at almost 40 bucks a mag >.<

Love the 10/22, reliable and simple. It's not my most accurate .22, but it is more than accurate enough for gophers and plinking. Very customizable if you want to, but I just keep mine stock.

My Marlin 795 with Boyds SS Evolution stock. The grip is a bit short top to bottom for my hands, but otherwise it's a very stable stock and I think it looks pretty good too.
