Hi guys i have been looking at guns for a while now and I am wondering what is a good first hand gun to own is it a Glock lets say 17 or 19 or a colt or wilson combat 1911 pistol. Any advice would be great thank you.
 
I got a .22LR for my first handgun. Lots of shooting practise, for cheap. Shooting a 45ACP, or even a 9mm, can be expensive.
But if you're considering a Wilson, maybe money isn't an issue.;)
 
A .22 would be a good starter pistol no doubt. That being said I don't think you can go wrong with a glock 17. If you purchase one, you will have it forever.

If i could only have one handgun, it would be a glock 17. I have way too many guns but i always shoot straight with my G17.

My vote is Glock.

You didn't say what kind of shooting you would be doing..

If you're looking for high accuracy right out of the gate, easy to shoot in center fire I'd go with a CZ 75 Shadow in 9mm, for just plinking a Ruger or Buckmark in 22 cal and then a Glock as a second pistol..
 
I bought a CZ75 SP-01 Shadow as my first, haven't regretted it one sec. 9mm ammo isn't all that expensive. That said, a decent .22 might be less intimidating, and cheaper too.
 
I reccomend any 1911 A1 or the Smith & Wesson M&P (I like it better than the Glock for my big hands). .22's are great to learn on, but so are pellet/ bb guns of the same gun and alot cheaper to buy, maintain and shoot than the firearm counterpart (check out http://www.replicaairguns.com). If you want to shoot different ammo out of one gun, I suggest getting a calibre conversion kit for the pistol.

Ok, let's assume you do not want a .22, and you have already had experience with guns, and you are set on a 9mm- .45 range.
Glocks are idiot proof. 17s are easier to find than 19s. Reliable and accurate enough. Have you tried the striker trigger on one? Same problem with the M&P and Walther series. Some like it, some hate it. The 1911, you mentioned Colt and Wilson Combat. These are pretty pricey guns and if you pick .45, also pricey ammo. Can you afford to shoot them regularly? These are questions you have to ask yourself before making the investment.
Both are great guns in their own right, along with all the CZs, Brownings, M&P, Berettas etc. out there. You need to try them, fondle them and finally decide if you can afford to shoot them. Once you go through this checklist, you will know which one is for you. Good luck and have fun!

Too bad you can't hold a few first but like like most gun owners you'll probably end up buying and selling. you'll get lucky off the bat, or eventually find something you like. I like the recommendation of an inexpensive 22 (Ruger Mk I, II or III) and a CZ sp-01 because they hold well, are easy to shoot and accurate, but if you want the glock, get the glock. Heck, if you can afford a wilson, buy them all and sell the ones that don't do it for you.
 
I think depending on your starting pointing. If never shoot a gun before, .22 is good start, cheap and easier to handle to build the foundation.
after a while, or if you have shot guns on and off before, it's a good choice between glock 9mm or M&P 9mm for cheap. Then, you may also think about P226 given the different factory conversion kits that allow you to have different calibers for cheap. I am eyeing on the P226 TAGOPS. It comes with fiber optic/night sight combo, SRT and 4 Mags.

If you can, get out and try a few different guns to help you decide. Some ranges like DVC in Port Coquitlam have a lot of range guns you can try - you just have to buy the ammo from them.
