Hey everyone, so I am looking to grab a Russian SKS an want to get a chrome bored one becouse I may be firing corrosive ammo from time to time. I have heard certain years were Chrome lined an certain years were not and I was wondering if anyone knew what years were chrome lined/ which arsenal. Also have heard about problems with the firing pins being free floating some years sometimes causing slamefire. Trying to find what year SKS so I know what to grab in a week when license arrives. Would Reliable Gun in Vancouver be able to tell me this, thinking Imay go there to grab with SVT and a Mosin? hear lever arm has terrible customer service.

Try Martin at Corwin-Arms (site sponsor). The latest one I got from him was chrome lined, and he's awesome to deal with.

Generally for Soviet SKS 1953 and post years are chromed bore and barrels.
Not too sure about any other Nations SKS's.
Google this website, it has everything you ever wanted to know and probably a lot more than you could ever know, about all SKS's:

1952 and above will have chrome lined barrels. For free floating firing pin rifles that are pre 1950 will have spring loaded firing pin all rifles after 1950 free floating pin. Before you go to the range just clean the bolt on the new rifle it will prevent slam fires. There is cosmoline and grease there if not cleaned firing pin is not really free floating.

They started chrome lining the barrels part way through 51. You can find them on earlier ones if the gun was refurbished and the barrel swapped for a new one, but not too common. If you are shooting corrosive, you must clean it anyway as the gas systems and other parts are not chrome lined. Good rule of thumb is if you shoot corrosive make sure you do so when you have the time to clean the gun afterward. In that case non chrome barrel makes no difference. As far as the floating firing pin only the 49 and early 50 have them from stock. After that they switched to free floated. But if you want a spring firing pin just get the Murry spring firing pin mod. Only really useful if using modern production soft primer ammo. But the option is there. Either way make sure you keep the firing pin channel clean and you should have no problems.

Right, my 1950 SKS and my Mosins don't complain about not being chrome.

Soldiers who could not read or write could shoot corrosive ammo and clean the rifles properly, and thats why we still have them today.

Is there a hidden message in the above sentence?

If you can get chrome or a similar coating on a firearm always get it unless you're building a 1/2 moa bench gun. Lasts longer and importantly is far easier to clean.

Slam fires are overrated, clean you firing pin channel once in awhile and don't use ammo with soft primers.

sweet thanks for the advice guys! don't have any buds with SKS's... yet! so no one to ask these things before now. Figure Chrome bore just last a bit longer, still gettin a mosin an SVT that are non chrome, just want my SKS, which I will probly be shooting more chrome, for more rounds thru the barrel. Will be shooting corrosive some days, some days not depending on time available to clean

One of my observations is that the non-chrome barrels shoot better. Of the shooter side of my collection, two are non-chromed and are in the handful at the top for accuracy.
