I heard through the grapevine this is a way to squeeze in an extra 3-4rds, so at the range I used my buddy's G22 mag in his G17 and no joy. Barely held the cartridges and had nonstop problems feeding.

Is this an old wive's tale or am I doing it wrong?

i tryed this with my G17 too and it sucks. FTF every 2-3 rounds. Better stay with 10 reliable rounds.

I saw a Glock doing it no prob. The owner shot an entire match with a Glock 22 (with 9mm conversion barrel) and OEM G22 .40 mags. I know all this because we had an entire conversation about it.

Glock mags don't do it so well. Beretta 96 mags work in a 92, and feed 9mm just fine.

This. I can and have used my G22 mags to load 9mm. The drawback is that some rounds may not sit properly in the feed lips (9mm are slightly tapered and obviously smaller) and if you bump them, they may spill out. This can be remedied by slightly squeezing the lips together. I believe the mag body on the Beretta 96 and 92 are the same which is why 9mm fits without issues in the 96 mag.

I use 9mm in my .40 mags for my Glock 22 with a 9mm conversion barrel and haven't had an issue yet. It's been around a year going to the range generally once a week, maybe I just got lucky with my mags? I've only ever shot one box of .40 using them now that I think about it the rest has all been 9mm, a couple thousand rounds at this point.

There was another thread about this a year or so ago, and from what I recall, it was hit or miss. However, I recall that that someone more knowledgeable than I pointed out that if you modify the magazine in any way, including adjusting the lips, then it is no longer legal. Now, whether that is true or not, I don't know. All I know is that I tried .40 mags in my M&P9 and it was nonstop jamming.

Glock 17/22- Doesn't work so well.
SIG P226/229 - Works OK, not great.
Beretta 92/96 - Works flawlessly.
Springfield XD 9/40 - Works well.
HK P30 9/40 - Works OK, not great.

Yeah, I think I recall that thread. I'm sure altering a mag is probably illegal but it's not enough altering that it no longer functions reliably with the specified caliber. The slight bending of the feed lips still reliably feeds 40SW. Some of my G22 mags have tighter feed lips than others. If I'm adjusting the loose ones to be identical to the tighter factory ones and still functions as a 40SW mag, is that considered enough modification to be deemed illegal or is that considered "repairing" a worn loose mag back to factory specs?

40 S&W Mags work fine in my 9mm CZ 75B, just had to bend the mag lips slightly to retain the rounds. No issues yet.
