Cheap 3 gun idea??

I really appreciate the response guys. Like I said. I'm really new and likely naive. I realize the tokarev is a bad example. Maybe a stock class with pump shotgun only. We could call it the " zompocalypse prep" category. As it would have to be moderately priced guns with a steady supply of cheap ammo. Open sights would be a must as well ( they're far more reliable)

I think you'll find that most "Stock" divisions meet your criteria. In our area Stock is mostly newer guys with pump guns and it's all iron sights. And when you can buy a $500 AR and feed it with Norinco or Russian steel case ammo it's reasonably cheap too.

i'd shoot a rimfire 3 gun match
i have the stuff for a "regular" 3 gun match including various "expensive" guns but have no real interest in using them like that
but a rimfire match would be a hoot

This sounds fun! I could even get my kids into it! My daughter would love a rimfire 3 gun match.

I don't get out to as many matches as I'd like, and I'm not super competitive: I go to have fun. Yea, there are guys with really cool kit that cost them big bucks, but I run what I'm comfortable with. At my first match it was a 14.5" Norc AR, a NP-22 Norc 9mm ( Sig P-226 clone) and an old Mossberg 500 pump with an 18" barrel and a mag extension that I got at a gun show for about $25. I think that this is year three that I've been going and my gear hasn't gotten a lot fancier. The AR is still a Norc, but now a 10.5" since I've found that at the shoots I go to we rarely shoot more than 50 meters-so shorter/ more maneuverable works better for me. The shotgun is now a Mossberg 930 that I got at Milarm for just over $500 bucks. It's not some special SPX or Blackwater edition, just a plain old 930 that I put a side-saddle on. The pistol is still the same Norc NP-22. Why? Cause it shoots good and feels good in my hand. Will it shoot MOA at 300 yards-not a chance, but it will put 2 holes pretty close together in a cardboard target at 10 yards while I'm walking. Yes, walking. I leave running to young guys and real operators that are being shot at.

As has been said: it's not about fancy equipment-it's about coming out and shooting, and having fun. If you feel like others have an advantage because of fancy equipment, and you won't see your name at the top of the leaderboard, then that's something you'll have to work out with yourself. Nobody will look down on you-at least they don't at the shoots I go to- if you don't have the latest whiz-bang operators super special equipment. I've reached a point in my life where I could upgrade, but I haven't, because I keep it in perspective for me. I get out to 2 or 3 shoots a year. I'm familiar with the equipment that I have. I go out to have fun cause I'm never going to do this competitively-I don't have the time to practice. And to be honest: tying up 5 or 10 grand on equipment that I'm going to use a few times a year doesn't make any sense to me. Just my 2 cents in a long winded way

pay to play, its the same with any shooting game. Besides, no matter how much your guns cost the ammo you use will be several times that. Just like any sport, there is a minimum needed for "good" gear, then after that its how much you feel like spending chasing the extra 10% advantage. Thankfully that seems to hover at $1000 including optic for your rifle, $800 for your shotgun and a few go fast bits, and $500 for your pistol. couple hundred more for mags and you are good to go. I you cant invest that much in gear then you cant afford the ammo either to be super competitive. But its still cheaper than golf

Everyone has a different budget and a different level of interest in competition. Those two things will determine how much you should spend on gear.

If I was short of cash, I would rather partner with one or two people instead of buying the cheapest equip you can get. Buy a handgun (because there are so many more games to play with it) and get two buddies to buy a rifle and shotgun, then go have fun!

Thanks stevo. That's good to hear. What kind of pistols are guys running in that division?

Pretty much every type you can imagine. Most common across all our divisions are striker fired pistols like Glocks and M&Ps, followed by 1911s and DA/SA pistols like Sig.

As long as your pistol is reliable, it's the shooter that makes the biggest difference.

Assuming you already have a 9mm pistol. Any of them will do just fine.

Get yourself a Hi-Point 9mm carbine, a Norinco red dot scope for it, and a Maverick-88 pump shotgun.

The Hi-point is a way better choice than an SKS. It takes the same cheap ammo that your handgun uses, you can get legal ten round pistol mags from Irunguns for it, and it will easily mount a red-dot on top. I've seen guys hit bowling pins at 100 yards pretty consistently with them.

Not all 3 gun orgs permit pistol caliber carbines. It's minimum .223/7.62x39 for our local matches.

Yeah, I know.

And some 3-gun orgs actually permit ONLY pistol caliber carbines for their matches.

Most don't care either way.
