Hi all. I was wondering if there are any lefties out there who have ever used a Browning BAR or Remington semi-auto long gun for hunting and had issues with their eyes since the ejection port is on the right hand side and the spent casing would eject across your right eye?

Just curious.

I've given up trying to find a left-hand BAR.

Thanks for your input.

Chris,

a dealer of Browning will find you what they have on stock in Canada if really you need a left hand one.

the problem is not that much the case in the eye but more the powder residue especially when it is raining.

i used different kind of right hand semi autos and honestly never had issues.

Thank you for the information. I have to shoot with my prescription glasses anyway and I'm thinking it wouldn't be a problem. Just like to ask the question.

Don't waste your money on a lefty gun.

They cost more, parts are not stocked anywhere and they have next to zero resale value.

Not to mention most righty guns are easier and faster for lefties to use. I have shot everything from tiny handguns, rifles, shotguns, rifles, light machine guns, general purpose machine guns, heavy machine guns and barret .50 cals, etc. All right handed guns as a lefty and never an issue.

That being said the only guns you will have an issue with is righty only bull pups like the T97. Those are a no go.

Buy and enjoy you righty guns.

I'm left handed and shoot right mostly out of convenience as noted above - makes life simple. Never been hit by ejecting brass or shells. Bolts take a little getting used to but you can manage. Most Auto loaders are a breeze.

I've used a 742 regular for years and i'm left hand left eye dom- in other words i'm about as southpaw as the come- the only mod I made was I put on a slip on recoil pad b/c the stock was too short- the way to test it- throw the rifle up to your shoulder as if you're going to shoot- DON'T climb the stock and put your cheek on the cheekpiece WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE- about half way down the buttstock- most auto loaders eject far too fast for the eye to "see" the ejecting case and if you're using a scope, the right eye is closed anyway- if you "see" the case, it's a subconscious thing-

Owned a Rem 742 in .30-06, I never did hunt with it but fired it a fair bit with iron sights and optics mounted.

ZERO issues with casing ejection, but holy hell does that rifle had a stiff charging handle.

I did not feel the need to keep my face back at all to avoid brass, been to many years so I cannot recall the ejection pattern but was of no issue for myself.

Shot mountains of CF sporting right port eject autos, never once had an issue. Now blow back pistol cal. carbines will give you an eyeful of un burnt powder!

Guys thanks for all the good comments and information. I'm an old surveyor and have spent decades with my eye glued to the telescopic site on the 'gun' AKA transit and I always have both eyes open with any kind of scope even standard iron sights. That's the way I shoot my S&W as well. All my life I've shot Remington 700 BDL left hand bolt guns and thought it would be kind of nice to get another semi-auto.

I had a Remington semi-auto in 1983 (Can't remember the model name) in .243 and I took a beautiful Saskatchewan mulie that I should have had measured and scored, but I never thought about it then. As someone pointed out a LH semi-auto is worthless from a financial point of view as far as trying to sell it again. One thing I did notice shooting my Remington was powder residue flashing past in front of my right eye. That is more or less what I am concerned about but that is just my two cents worth of opinion.
Again thanks for all the great feedback.

I didn't think that lefties approved of any firearms, let alone semi-automatics.

Oh wait, you mean left-handed?? Nevermind then.

I have tried shooting pistols right and left-handed. I generally sucked either way. The ejection side didn't seem to matter.

Was the same while playing with my Marlin 795 - no real difference as far as where the gun ejects or even working the controls. You can adapt pretty quickly to however the firearm is set up - at least for casual use (no comment if you are going to war or some such). However, I admit I was just doing it for the novelty, as I am right-handed and right-eye dominant.
