Hi all,

I picked up an A2 stock kit for my SA20 and when I got my rifle, I noticed that the castle nut is staked to the receiver end plate. Any ideas how to remove this without damaging anything too badly? Should I try to drill it out somehow?

Thanks!

Done it a few times and the best method which is also common practice on the ar15 forums.

Use a punch to push back the displaced metal of the end plate then with a castlenut wrench and the lower on a block vised...twist the nut off.

Take the pistol grip off and hold the lower by where the grip fits. Use a mullet to strike the wrench.

One of these GT? LOL

That rifle does not use a castle nut. If you don't cut the staking, you will break things.

Why do you need to remove it?

Here's the pics of the nut. (buffer tube retaining nut?)

When I was issued a C7, it had a fixed stock, so I am kind of going for the nostalgia factor.

Perhaps it's an overly simple question, but I am reluctant to permanently damage my rifle.

You just remove that bit of staking material that got pushed into that indent. Hammer and little chisel/punches will do the trick.
