hey guys,
ive got a rem 700 but im still waiting for that trigger recall to get done so im SOL for this deer season with that gun, im probably going to end up just setting it up for long range target seeing that its the AAC-SD and weighs a tonne anyway, and i dont feel like buying a timmy for it. i love the feel of the stock trigger they just have to fix it.

i havent been looking around, actually wasnt planing on going out this season because everyone had other stuff going on but all of a sudden everyones other plans fell through or they got a break at work so hunt trip is back on, and since its my camp i guess im going.

so my rem 700 is a 308, im not opposed to getting another 308 but is there anything else i should consider?

and then on to the actual rifle:
1. im just looking for something cheap in the $4-800 range, im just going to throw the glass on it from my rem so im not concerned about that.
2. not getting another rem 700 (mine actually had an a/d in the bush last year just a couple months before the recall was issued, so its not going back out there)
3. and i want something superlight. if i go with a bigger caliber like a 30-06 how much extra weight is the rifle? whats the smallest caliber i should be looking at for deer?
4. i want reliability and lightweight over pinpoint accuracy, really its a thick bush, 50-100 yards is about as far as i would be able to spot one anyway.

any good deals out there lately?

We just had them come in there will be up for sale this evening. Zastava 85 7.62x39, 17.5 inch barrel, 2.8 kg. Future new improved extractor so use of Cheap surplus 7.62x39 for target practice is no problem. 7.62x39 with soft point hunting ammo within 200m packs enough punch for any deer plus it is heavy enough for shooting through brush. You will be within your budget. Scope and mounts are not included but we do sale them, This is 4x German Post Russian Made VOMZ Scope

There are a lot of rifles that fit your needs. The ones I've had experience with are Tikkas which are relatively light and have a good reputation for accuracy, the Browning micro which again is a good weight and I like the magazine better. On the lower end there are Savages which though functional aren't pleasing to my eye or the Rugers which aren't real light but have controlled round feeding if you feel this is an advantage. Go try some rifles and pick what fits you nicely and suits your fancy.

Winchester M70 and Tikka are two good choices in that price range. I have the Winchester. Hard to go wrong with a 308 or 30-06 for a deer rifle but if it is strictly deer and game that size 270 would get my vote.

Light, inexpensive, handy, and out to 100 yards for deer spells 30/30 in my books. Although some here will shame you if you put optics on it (not me). I have a little Winchester 94 AE Trapper, 16" barrel - it doesn't get much handier, but it can be a little tricky to keep steady.

When I go in the thick stuff and 100 yard is as far as you ever get where I go, I take my 1894 along in 44 mag. Plenty accurate at 100 yards with my leupold 2-7x3. 10 shots in the tube. Super fast follow up if required. 265gr cast gas check at 1700fps. Can carry it all day long and it's a nice short light package.

Picked up a T/C venture in 270win last week. Smokin deal with the $75 rebate from T/C. 5R rifling to boot too.
Only thing is I'm more of a wood stock kinda guy. So boyds stock is in the mail.. All in was still under $500

Very impressed with the gun after handling it compared to the 700's or ruger americans

Get yourself a Ruger SS Compact in 7mm-08 or .308... there have been a few on the EE lately... super bush gun... pop a little 2-7X on there and you are all set.

^^^
X2 on the x-bolt. Drop mag, locking bolt, lightweight and accurate. 308 / 30-06 or 7mm-08 get my vote

i really like the Tikka T3, i was going to get 1 before i bought the rem700, i guess considering the situation im stuck with right now the Tikka would have been a much better idea....

Stupid me turned down a 30-30 a couple months ago...would have gotten a bran new 1 for $200 with some cheap glass on it....it got sold in a package deal to someone on here with a shotgun and he got it for about the same price.

i was looking at the T/C last year, great looking rifle but no one had it in stock at the time.

a buddy of mine has the Ruger in a 270 and man that thing is light and amazing accuracy, really like it but i cant remember what model his is and every time i see it at the range then go to the store he got it at to buy 1 it just seems like the 1 in the store is heavier and not the exact same model..so i keep passing on it.
I got myself a browning xbolt in 308 its just beautiful and I paid 669 at Saskatoon gunworks and its a beautiful gun to shoot
X bolt was a top contender when looking at the rem 700, but i believe to get the synthetic stock that made it as light (or close to it) as the tikka it would have been over a grand .

right now im back to leaning towards the Tikka, ill g check them out tomorrow, appreciate the info guys, keep suggestions coming.
i would like a 20" or shoter barrel. weight and compact is key.

im thinking i may throw my leupold VXR 1-4 on it for this season, i love leupold glass. bushnell made a good scope a couple yrs ago that was 1.5-8x...wish i grabbed that when i had the chance.

any thoughts on the Tikka T3 light 22 7/16" barrel vs the Tikka T3 Compact 20" barrel. the weight difference is 1/16th of a lb so its not a big deal.
the compact is about $50 more.

From each mfg website,
Tikka T3 lite: 6lbs 3oz
Browning X-bolt micro hunter (wood stock): 6lbs 2oz

Not arguing which one is better, but the x-bolt is a little more compact with the 20" barrel

if i get the Tikka i wont be getting stainless. i take good care of my rifles, blued is fine which also knocks about $200 off the MSRP.
i just found the T3 22" barreled version in 308 on sale for $630...thats tough to beat.
