Your favourite alternate mechanism, that is to say non-bolt action.

I'm gradually drifting from bolt actions, despite still having a good deal invested in them. The more I use symmetrical, ambidextrous actions the more I appreciate them. I do have a slight handicap with regards to shooting, as I was born a lefty, with right eye dominance. This has made many guns an awkward dance to get to know. I still shoot these symmetrical actions right side, as it's easier to fight the hand than the eye and right handed shooting is second nature now, but there is something pleasing about an action that feels and looks the same from either shoulder. In fact, the same can be said for aircraft, cars, and women; they all look better when evenly proportioned and identical from both sides!

So, my No.1, and Merkel double have climbed to be my favourite rifles to handle, look at, and shoot. My little fascination with symmetrical rifles is more than an aesthetic thing, there are real reasons I prefer the double in particular and I've detailed a few in some of my writing like the Megafauna bit. I'll do more of that in an upcoming article and shoot of stopping rifles. My point is, all conventions aside, what rifle just looks and feels right to you? I actually prefer lever actions to bolts too, for the same reasons mentioned above, for instance. I've yet to have more than a passing fling with a pump and really should explore it. Some semis, like the M14 although not symmetrical, hold a special place for me too.

The deeper I get into my hunting odyssey, the more I neglect my bolts despite them being the overwhelming majority in my cabinet. In fact I just today wrapped up buying a certain .450 Rigby I'm sure a few of us eyed and considered, so my bolt action interests are by no means dead, just being challenged. In the stopping rifles article I'm working on there will be a good comparison on a moving target I hope of big bore bolts, and doubles. I may be surprised by the result, and I'm keeping an open mind, but I'm getting off course.

What's your favourite alternative to bolts?

I like my cars, guns and sure, planes even... prefer the ladies lopsided though...

I am a Ruger No.1 fan... specifically the "A" and "S" and "RSI" versions... less a fan of the "B" and "V"... I vastly prefer them over a bolt action... I may have one or two break action singles also... ;)

Also have a long time love affair with Win 94's...

Love a single in the right application..... something very special about having that one shot..... I am as big a die hard bolt fan as you will get... but (flame me if you will)..... if you need rapid fire a 7600 pump is where it is at..... I will never go semi...

All that being said..... a double rifle in 45/70 is totally on my list for black bear and whitetail......

I have about 30 or so bolt guns but the last year or so.......................

I don't use them as much as before, but the 760/7600 rifles are a very good alternative to a bolt action, esp for eastern hunting.

They are accurate, dependable, handle well and easy on the pocket book while taking surprisingly heavy loads.. Tweek the trigger, add a pad and sling rings and you're GTG. Most folk who don't like them have never used on to any great extent.

This BRNO 7x57R/12ga is a nice/versatile alternative during deer season. Shoots 154RNs well and 12 ga hit to same POI as rifle.

When not using one of my M-70's I carry a semi, either a Ruger in 44 mag, or my Dad's Win. M-100. The little Ruger 44 is my very favorite of the two. I have a Win 94-22 mag that is also very dear to my heart.

;)Good choice. I have a similar item, no scope but an additional set of OU 12ga. barrels.

I've mentioned it previously in posts but the 7x57R/12ga. set-up is ideal for around here on windy rainy days, walking old skid roads, in river bottem areas here on the 'wet coast'. Especially as you're just as likely to run into a Ruff Grouse as you are a Blacktail.

I'm a real narrow minded, picky sob. ALL of my big game rifles are CRF bolts.

Even my varmint rifle is a CRF bolt.

I have no intention of alternating to something else.:p

Mine came with an Improved Modified choke so was way tight for grouse here. A trip to the specialist and it came home I/C.

Trigger is horrid and not easy to tune. Worse than a BLR!

Before gun nutz I was a lever guy but have since moved to bolt guns. I have a love hate relationship with the Rem pump offerings. I love the looks of them and the nostalgia that go with them but I find them difficult to hold comfortably due to the forend being so far out there. I think I'd have to say levers would be my alternative choice - who knows, maybe they will be my first choice again some day :)

I don't really have a favorite, it is a toss up between bolt action and semi auto, so you can decide which is the alternate/runner up.
