At around 5:20 he talks about how to avoid the idiot mark, but if you've never field stripped a 1911 I suggest you watch the entire video (7 min)
One tool I found that makes life easier is a bushing wrench; they're usually made of plastic and they fit over the bushing and plunger cap and they help you free up the bushing. They're cheap, like $6-$10.
My own OCD would prevent this after 50-100 rds...if I could afford such a beautiful pistol that is!That is quite the "first centerfire" pistol OP. You have certainly set the bar very high with that Les Baer...{"someday Plinker, don't be envious of the OP, be glad for him...your turn is coming...you may have to sell off some firearms but, your turn is coming".} Gawd help me, OCD and schizophrenia!?
LOL! I'm not sure if I will be able to either with my OCD. Plus I don't shoot pistol that frequently and I'd hate for it to be in uncleaned condition sitting for a few weeks. Maybe I will let it go for say 500 rounds. But that really is pushing it for me!
You can make up your own 'prevention tool' with some hard clear plastic packaging material.
You just need a pair of scissors, Sharpie for marking & hole punch.
I made these up in about 15 mins [not perfect but they do the trick]:
In a ~ 30+ yr love affair with the 1911/1911A1 I've easily owned over 100 different 1911's. While I've never put a noob scratch on one myself, I've owned & still own a few that came with it 'pre-installed'. Never seen a WWII vintage USGI 1911A1 that had actually been issued without the scratch.
Anyway, if you are very careful there's no need that your beautiful spankin' new 1911 should get one either.

Excellent link! Thank you! Does he ever make it look easy! Well I'm a sucker and ordered one of them idiot scratch prevention tools. I've just seen so many lovely 1911s with the mark that I didnt' want to take a chance.
I wish I could send a Les Baer to Alchemy and I can live without looking on Wilson.
Boy this sucks. I was going to skip out of work early to shoot the Baer for the first time at the range. Checked my range back and my LTATT expired in July! I expect the renewal is sitting at the club's office which will open tomorrow am :-(
Oh WOW! That sucks. Re: the noob scratch/idiot mark; just don't swing the stop lever arm to engage the plunger. I line up the link with the frame with a q-tip, and I install the slide stop arm at 90% or parallel with the slide. A little push straight down with the thumb and "click", in she goes. There is no need to swing the arm up to engage the plunger and it will scratch you gun...in a bad way. (there is a good way, like honest holster wear, but a noob scratch announces the fact you haven't a clue loud and clear to all who see it!
