Budget deer rifle?

The Marlin X7 in .308 would be a good choice... so would the Weatherby S2 in 7mm-08 or .308. Personally, I would look for a used Ruger MKII Hawkeye or Win M70... any cartridge from 6.5mm to .30 cal...

^^^^Nailed it.

I would simply say that the Savage 110 family of which there appear to be 40 variations are Ok firearms. The Savage Axis is the worst POS rifle, even worse than the 783?, and 710...and that's hard.

Another good gun would be the Weatherby Vanguard I, since the next gen is out i am sure you could find one for cheap on the EE.

I wonder about those Savage Axis. Seems to be a ton of used ones come up for sale on the EE and in the used gun racks. Nobody seems to keep them for long.

The Marlin X7s are a very good choice with lots of features for the price. They seem to be getting hard to find new and not many turn up used. Epps have a couple in 270 and a couple 308s in youth stocks. $360 ea. A 270 never is a bad choice.

I agree... buy the rifle and scope separately.

I bought a Savage Axis XP .270 Price out the door was 342.05 Then upgraded the scope as the one that came with it sells new for 40.00 on Ebay. Scope I got is a Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 and that was 188.00 then put a Boyds stock on it. 116.00 then a bipod 23.00 and a sling 15.00 then sold the original stock for 60.00 making my total price 664.00 or thereabouts. I also took the original scope and put it on my .22

For an economy rifle to get you out hunting, if you want new, I'd look at the Ruger American now arriving in stainless, or a Weatherby Vanguard S2. I'd put a Bushnell Legend HD 3-9X40 scope on it for about $200, and you've got solid equipment for a reasonable price. If you'll consider used, I'd get a Husqvarna bolt action and put the same scope on that...a fine Swedish Mauser. Since you're mainly deer hunting, and new to the sport, I'd get a caliber with reasonable recoil that you'll enjoy shooting and practicing with, but won't hold you back if you want to try for elk or moose one day. Two that fit the bill: ammo is found everywhere with different bullets loaded for reasonable money, and recoil is light, are the .270 and .308. Those two calibers are also found in the excellent but inexpensive Husky rifles, by the way. Ammunition wise, I'd try 140 grain Nosler Accubonds in the .270 and 165 grain Accubonds in the .308 for all around deer to moose hunting. If you're just going to be hunting deer for awhile and you want to keep it cheap, most rifles like Federal Fusion ammo, and I'd get it in the same grain weight as the Accubonds. Hope this helps!

As far as recoil management and rifle familiarization goes, its not a problem. I've been target shooting for a number of years now but I am new to hunting so I am somewhat unfamiliar of which calibers are best suited for specific types of game. I'm also already set up for reloading so a less abundant round doesn't really bother me. I think having versatility is a good thing but I am more drawn to having one caliber for one purpose.

I got a combo at a Gun show, new from a LGS booth. POS scope, plastic and cheap throughout, horrible trigger...nothing good to say about it except the price. I sold it on the EE, and the guy i sold it too....has sold it also. The inspiration for my Sig line.

Another fellow had a post about getting one, changing stock, scope...and being into it for over $600. That buys a lot of rifle on the EE.

If the OP, is buying one rifle and done...my choice 30-06. If a specific, one purpose deer rifle, and the first hunting rifle of many, something like 7-08 or 270 sounds good.

Just as I thought, thus the volume of nearly new used ones for sale.

True words! I don't ever see the thought of spending cold/hard $$ on fixing up an entry level rifle. Better to leave it as is and shoot away before selling it.

Hello everyone,
I'm looking at getting into some deer hunting soon and there are alot of options out there for rifles and caliber. I'm pretty familiar with the mainstream calibers(.223,.308,30-06 etc.) but not so much on the in between ones. I have been considering a Marlin X7 in .308(unsure of what optic yet). Seeing as price is a limiting factor for myself, I just wanted to get some opinons on what everyone else likes to use and possible recomendations. I'm also not to fond of the idea of being in a tree stand so weight also comes into play. I'm not necessarily limiting myself to the very bottom end rifles but at the moment cheaper is better lol.
Thanks.
any time someone asks for ideas for a hunting rifle even without the word "budget" the same options are posted as if the only thing out there worth using is the chepest you can find. You can use the search function if you don't see all the frugal brands posted here in this thread.

Savage Axel ............ no.
There were a couple Vanguards in the EE for a decent fair, in 308win
if'n me memory hasn't failed me.
Ruger 'merican is next down in line far as I'm concerned.
Maybe the Marlin as mentioned previous?
A used Ruger 77 if one is patient 'nuff may roll around and a decent
rifle if not beat up.
Of course the old standby Mauser 98's if one should be so lucky?

If I were you, I would grab one of the two remaining XL7s in .270 from Ellwood Epps before they are gone.

Never mind all these savage this marlin that suggestions.....everybody knows vanguards are the best rifles out there for the money.....oh wait I have one on the ee right now, imagine that......strange coincidence
