I have been reloading for the 17 Hornet for a while now. I have been using Lil gun and A1680 powders as well as Remington 7 1/2 rifle primers.

I will be taking possession on a 22 Hornet in the next day or two. I will try the above noted powders along with 40 VMax bullets and Remington 6 1/2 primers and Federal Small Pistol primers.

My question is: even though the cases and powders are pretty much the same it appears the 22 Hornet shoots better with small pistol primers. Has anyone tried them in the 17 Hornet? Is there any reason they would not work?

As usual I am looking for the most accurate load in all of my rifles and any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The 22 hornet has a lower max pressure (43k psi) than the 17 hornet (50k psi) so that could be a reason to not use pistol primers in the 17. Though even the 22 at 43k psi is above most higher pressure pistol rounds (9mm and 44 mag both at 36k psi). The really high pressure pistol rounds like 460 and 500 S&W use rifle primers a lot of the time because they can hit 50k psi.

Pistol primers have thinner cups that aren't designed to withstand high rifle-like pressure levels. The higher pressure in the 17 may cause the primers to blow or leak gas.

The Brno 22 Hornet I used to have also leaked with pistol primers, part of the time, with standard load.
