So, I plan on buying a new rifle. I have been looking at the Springfield M1A a lot, then stumbled along the XCR. What I want out of it, is something I can bang a 12 inch gong at 300 at the range or take out into the bush and take a deer at 300. Having the ability to put optics on is a big plus. I like the 308 cal and non res.

Any one have some good feed back on accuracy ? Reliability? Heard their customer service is garbage.

Maybe other suggestion's? Worst comes to worst I buy another bolt gun.

The XCR-M is not know for spectacular accuracy. The one I shot was getting about 3-4 moa with most factory loads and the best my buddy has gotten so far with handloads is about 1.5 moa but probably averaging closer to 2 moa.
It is a reliable rifle and seems to be well made.
Robinson Arms customer service isn't the greatest if you call in and start yelling and bashing the rifle but they are decent if you are civilized and explain calmly what your problem is. It doesn't really matter though since Wolverine is taking care of their customers very well. If you have a problem just call and they will send you the parts needed or have you sent the rifle in and they will fix it. Pretty much the best customer service I've ever heard of with a firearms retailer.
That being said the new ATRS modern hunter looks to be the best thing to ever come our way in the 308 semi auto non restricted category. Should be much more accurate and being a Canadian manufacturer the service and parts supply should be excellent. The price is a little higher than an XCR-M but I'd venture to say it will be three times the rifle the XCR is and will only be a few hundred dollars more.
Pricing will be comparable to the Fame 542 (old Swiss Arms design built in Chile) but from what I've seen from the one I handled they are not the same quality the Swiss rifles were. They seem decent but for the same money I'll take the modern hunter.

The XCR-M with a scope and bipod is bloody HEAVY!! Also the single point attachment means the weight of the rifle is always on your neck. Hunting with it will be tiresome quickly! I can consistently gong the M at 240m which is as far as my range goes with factory FMJ.
Unless you have a h- on for a semi auto hunter, go with the bolt gun. Less hassle and way better with weight/ distribution.
Remmy 700, Tikka or Sako would be excellent choices.

It'll shoot 2 or 3 around 1.5", then open up to 4-5" at 100 yards. Those were my results. A 12" gong might be a bit small for 300 yards with those numbers. I'd have some serious reservations about attempting a deer at 300 yards. I planned to hunt with mine, but, the results were consistent as stated above, both with hand loads and match factory ammo.

It's a heavy expensive plinker at best.

The M1A will get you there all day long.

If you would like I can tell you a long and expensize story about how I spent alot of money and 3 years looking for the perfect plinking and hunting rifle. The first rifle i bought was a tikka t3, and after selling it and buying 4 different rifles thinking they would be better at the job i ended up buying another tikka.

Hey, if he wants to buy an XCR-M by all means he can.

I tell my MP all the time that gun owners drive the economy more than he realizes. We all do our part. Hell, I just took a look at my firearms spreadsheet yesterda and thought about all the taxes alone that I paid in acquiring them....

Yea, from the couple days of research and feed back on this thread... I don't need an expensive plinker... I have more then a few already ! I think a good bolt with a nice optic on top to make 5 shots look like 3 will have to be the way I go. Plus semis are a pain to clean anyways ! lol

How are Semi's pain to clean? Especially piston operated guns like XCR?

I can admit cleaning the XCR was actually super simple. I'd even say preferable to my bolt gun in many ways.

Yes, more parts, but, I wasn't cleaning out the gas tube every time either. It just came apart so easy. I certainly wouldn't let that be a determining factor.
