I have never been a huge bolt action Ruger fan and have only owned 2 M77's. Both were tang safety models. I understand that some of the early models had accuracy issues due to inconsistency of barrel quality, but at some point that changed. How are you guys and gals enjoying your Mk. II model 77's? I am looking at some new old stock stainless synthetic models and wondering mainly about accuracy. I know that buying a Tikka, Sako, Cooper or even M700 will general mean pretty good accuracy is guaranteed, but I have not heard much about the Model 77.

So in your view what are the pros and cons?

Accuracy is excellent... fit and finish is very good... I personally prefer the 3 position safety... and nothing else out there has the robust build of the MKII... I have a dozen of them, so that should tell you how I feel about them.

Nice looking laminate rifles Hoyt

Thanks... the synthetics are (top to bottom); 77/22, 77/44, 77 MKII .350 RM. The laminates are (top to bottom); .223, .260, .308, .358... they all shoot great... I can't find a bad load in the .358... it shoots everything I put through it through the same hole at 100 meters... 200/225/250's & different powders, doesn't seem to matter... weird but good.

I've had two , a 308 and a 350 RM . Both of them were very accurate , solid rifles ....... I don't know why I sold them.......... oh yes , I'm a gun whore . I'm with hoytcanon , I prefer the three position safety over the older tang mounted ones on the 77's . All in all , I like them .

I currently have 3 Mark II M77 rifles in my safe. There is the stainless RSI 250-3000 a blued Compact in .308, and a stainless in 30-06. All three shoot quite well.
(The 308 is now wearing the 2-7 Leupold compact in low rings pictured on the '06, and the '06 is wearing a 3-9 Vortex Viper.)

Supposedly a better trigger but a rougher finish in both the "blued" and stainless versions.

The LC6 trigger "is" better IMO... and the matte stainless is not "rougher"... it is matte, as opposed to the older polished stainless... I have and like both.

I have both the Hawkeye and Mk II. Both are wicked in the accuracy department, my .280 Mk II can be finicky with loads, but shoots 160 grain ABs very well. The Mk II has a below average trigger and the Hawkeye has a decent trigger. The Hawkeye is slightly less smooth than my Mk II, both are really solid, smooth and quick to cycle.

For a hunting rifle they have no equal in the price bracket IMO. An aftermarket trigger and a bedding job and the only rifle I would rather have under $2000 is a Kimber.

The Hawkeye I have has a really good trigger, nice light pull, no creep. Ruger seems to build their rifles to last a long time. I have the African model, and the finish and the blueing is a lot better than other makes.

Well I think I will snag a SS Hawkeye. The decision may be a simple as choosing the chambering. One is .270 Win and the other is .280 Rem. - seriously. :)

I have a V/T in .308. It is stainless with a dull coating and a laminated stock. It is beautiful, functions perfectly and I can show you 3 shot groups shot at 100 yards that you can completely cover with a dime. It is definitely on the DNS (Do Not Sell) list!

Your making a good choice, as for the Cal if you reload, I would go for the .280 Rem as in my honest opinion is a better Cal because of the better choice of .284Cal bullets.
