Want to hit 1000 meters

Sightron SIII 6-24x50 and $800-$1000 for a nice rifle. Cartridge choice depends on if you reload or not. If not I would go with a 300 win mag. If you reload then the options are limitless and anything from .223 and up will do the trick. I've watched my buddy hit 1100 yards with his 223 and I did the same with my factory barreled Savage 308 win. There are cartridges better suited to it but it can be done with most centerfire cartridges out there.

What model of Savage 308 did you that with if I may ask?

Model 10, 20 inch medium contour, Weaver 20 moa rail, Sightron SIII 6-24x50 LRMOA, Burris XTR low rings. Looks like a tactical model with a large bolt knob but it just has an internal box mag. I got rid of the tupperware stock and put it in a Boyd's laminate stock and can get 1/2-3/4 moa with handloads.
Wasn't hitting the gong (think it was a 10 or 12 inch) every shot but had a great day. Was out to shoot the 338 Lapua that day but had the 308 with me so ran a few through it.

That is really impressive. I was debating for quite some time about which to go with (Savage or Rem). I have a savage .223 and it's a great rifle. But I'm not shooting at 1000 yds. I just got it because it was inexpensive and I had a ton of .223 ammo and had never used a savage. Might pick your brain on this a bit more if you don't mind. Really looking to do a build coming up here shortly on a .308. Great choice of stock, looks great!

My buddy's 223 has a custom stainless match grade barrel that's pretty darn long and he is hand loading 80 grain pills, I doubt many 223's will be shooting like that one does.
I bought this 308 off the EE for $500-$600, added the stock for around $150 shipped from Boyd's to my door and payed just under $1000 for the scope taxes in shipped to me from Mystic (couple years ago). I'm pretty happy with it now, it shoots well and is nice and short for when I take it hunting.
$2000 should be enough to get you to 1000 yards.

you will have more fun learning how to hit 300 yards consistently than by wasting time and money trying to overcome a boat load of variables ranging from inconsistent factory ammo to wind, to mirage, to limitations in the performance of an ordinary factory rifle. You do NOT need a 300 Win mag to hit 1000, all that will do is teach you every bad habit under the sun.

Here we go
ok built a custom 6.5 x55
Kreiger medium varmint 24 with break
on mcmillain ultra light sporter
running as hot as I can to get the most energetic out at a 1000
we have been practicing at a 1000 for well over a year now
this takes a lot of time and energy to get the right dope for your scope
there is a lot of variables to play with
spin drift for a 300 not so much for my little 264
the big boys have to contend with more flinch and drift and wind .
Its a lot of range hours and loading time to get there all of the time

What kind of groups are you getting at 300 yards? I've almost always found that running as hot as I can never gives me the most consistent results. My 223 is an exception, it likes pushing those little varmint bullets at near maximum book load but I don't shoot it long range.
I've always thought it best to load for greatest consistency and have to dial up a couple more clicks than to have the flatter trajectory and sacrifice tighter groups.
You don't need energy at long range unless you are hunting at those ranges (which would be irresponsible and cruel to the animal), you need consistent point of impact over all else when shooting long. I want to know that if I do my part I will get a hit and not wonder if it was me or the load that missed. This is why I'm never satisfied with a load until I can get 1/2 moa consistently. I'm getting close with the 308 and 338 Lapua but not quite there yet.

I can go as HY as 51 grains but I'm running 49 at 3000 fps
and can't shoot that load in 30 degrees to hot
1/2 at 300 and hole in hole at 100 . At 15-23 degrees
at 1000 8 inch and sometimes 4 "depending on conditions

Very nice :)
What powder is that, too bad you aren't using a more temperature stable powder.

If you think theres such thing as a stable powder you need to shoot over a chrono more often.

My girlfriends 6.5x55 like a the case full of H4831. Shes getting 2866 at 70°F and no pressure signs at 90°F.

For out of the box rifle for long range steel ringing, I was extremely impressed with my brothers Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor. First time out and using factory Hornady ammo loaded with the 140 Amax and he was hitting 1050 yards with only about 30 rounds through the rifle. Of course he had 2 spotters with one having lots of experience on said range who gave good corrections.

Glass is up to you and what you have left in your budget. I have never personally used a Sightron but wouldn't hesitate being that they are endorsed by a few of our fellow CGN'ers who compete in long range games.
