On occasion, my 870P won't fit 6 in the mag. It gets stuck at 5 rounds. The follower is catching around extension coupler. I've checked it for burs and there aren't any. I upgraded to a Vang Comp follower and that seems to have made the problem worse. I can't figure it out! Like to get some opinions here before I send it back to Wolverine. Cheers

What brand mag extension? Is it a single piece or multi?

Sounds like you've got poor fit between the extension and tube and exposed threads are catching the follower.

Thanks for the replies. It came stock with the Remington extension. It's multi piece (extension + coupler.)

mr00jimbo is right... there aren't any dimples. I install the coupler first, very tight, then the extension, occasionally banging the coupler while installing extension to make sure the spring is seated properly.

Sounds like you're doing it right. Do you have any other followers to try? Other than that, I got nuthin'.

Same thing happened with my 870p when it was new. It was the follower getting stuck at where the extension meets the mag tube. I rounded the edges of the follower, and took the extension off the coupler and put it back on properly and hasn't had an issue since. Dunno if it did anything but what I did with the extension and coupler was putting the extension all the way into the coupler first, then alternating between tightening the coupler onto the mag tube as much as it would go, and loosening the extension to give the coupler more room to go in, in an attempt to minimize as much of the gap as possible.

I also had the odd issue where it would bind the other way where the shells would be loose inside the mag tube after filling it past 5 but not any more since I fixed it.

get a Mossberg, remingtons are garbage these days. I bought a 1400 dollar 870P max and it was very finicky with ammo. My 590 will eat anything.

Last night I hand tightened the extension as hard as I could and tested a bunch of snap caps. Finally thought it was fixed but then all of a sudden it started up again :(

No other followers to try; just the plastic Remington and Vang Comp.

Exact same thing happens with mine.

What's the spring look like?

I'll admit, I've owned a couple 590A1's in the past and they were really awesome. I do love this 870 though (minus this issue.) The Marine Magnum finish is ###y as hell.

I had a Choate +2 extension on my 870 at one time, I now remember that I had to "break" the inside edge of the mating surface lightly with a small hand file or it'd hang up sometimes.

Once I did that it never hung up again, but I never quite trusted it nor did I like the balance (the Police profile barrel is too muzzle heavy to begin with) so I took it off.

That spring looks awfully long for a 6 round tube. That looks like the length of the one I put in my 870 when I added a +1 making the gun 7+1.

Here's the spring on my 870 Marine Magnum... which also has a 6-round tube... for size comparison for the OP.

Well Wolverine wasn't able to replicate the problem... so they haven't done anything to it. They're sending it back to me. Not sure why they couldn't replicate it (unless it was magically fixed in the mail!) I tested it right before I shipped it and it jammed :( I explained it only happens maybe 1 in 30 times.

Not sure what I should try next. Maybe a new spring?

Sandpaper to the stock orange follower? Both on the leading and following edges is how I fixed mine. Definitely would not get a new spring though since you already know it can hold the maximum amount of rounds, the length of the spring wouldn't have anything to do with where the follower sometimes gets stuck.

Well I got it back today and gave it a try (was hoping somehow it was fixed!) but still messed up :( I really want to keep this shotgun. I like it a lot but have hit a brick wall on how to fix it.

The spring is 27". Is that the right length for a 18.5" with extension?

I got another stock follower and tried your suggestion. No luck though.
