American hunter and BC guide caught poaching in Yukon.

I pack every ounce of edible game meat out of the bush but disgard older adult deer and moose livers because of possible heavy metal contamination.
I just keep the breast meat and the gizzards (with the inside lining peeled off) when hunting grouse though some would argue that the legs contain edible meat.
The disgarded livers and grouse legs disappear fast. Nothing goes to waste in the bush. Crows, ravens, foxes are on top of gut piles and disgarded game parts almost before they hit the ground.
I have found deer and moose carcasses abandoned in the bush for various reasons (hunter didn't have the correct tag, trophy hunters were only interested in the head and antlers).
I have no respect for trophy hunters who abandon the meat and feel they should have the book thrown at them.

why would we care what a law breaker thinks of what I've posted here?? I find it awfully strange and quite discouraging that I (among others) post a comment that expresses deep disdain for guides and hunters breaking laws , yet I alone become the 'target' by a couple guys here who I can only assume are associated with or in the guiding business.
I also find it quite discouraging that some guys are so record book hungry that they can't eat 200lbs of game meat in a year. if I knew guys like that I would call THEM out on it instead of post padding here by trying to find some issue with what I posted.
LOL the internet truly cracks me up sometimes.
Truth be known, most guided hunters are after a trophy and few return home with the meat; at least in my experience of guiding and knowing a bit of the outfitting business. Tell an American that he can only shoot a young buck or doe, go home with the meat, and it will also cost $5,500 for that hunt........ I don't think that the outfitting business would survive. Their objective, a trophy animal.
Although I guided for eight years, I don't support outfitting, knowing the insight of it.........that's why I quite. Yes I'm a trophy hunter, but I go home with the animal, and it is consumed.

I hear you and we probably have very similar ethics and methods when it comes to our hunting ;)
what steered me away from guiding was after a trip with Big 9 many years ago.....
and more recently when a guide told us to go ahead and shoot a third elk because his camp idiots didn't deal with the carcasses fast enough and a big grizz and her cubs made off with one of the two we killed. we came back from glassing the slopes for rams , to see 4 quarters instead of 8 hanging in the meat tent.
guide says.... it's the way it is sometimes, but no worries boys, we'll saddle up and find the herd again so you guys can each go home with an animal.

I went home elkless on purpose and have never booked a guided hunt since.

That name "Patrick Garrett" rings a bell. Is he the fellow that hunts sheep? If it is, not only he contravened several sections of the law, but he and his lawyer out-right lied to the court. The article stated that Garrett did not attend court because he was working to pay off his fine. Bullchit! This Pat Garrett is filthy rich, if not, then he owes the bank $100,000's of dollars for all his "guided" hunts.

I think you missed my point. If he has a multitude of money, then why did he and his lawyer state that "he had to work to pay off the fine." Your right to a certain degree that he has money, however; social media may eat him-up.

I almost got shot by a trespassing American poacher last deer season. I was in a ground a ground blind and was looking at a doe 30 feet away(too small) , next thing the doe puts it's head down to eat, and not 60' away exactly in line with me and the doe, I see a guy with his rifle up aiming directly towards me with his finger on the trigger!!!

I was on leased land, I dropped and flattened out, and started yelling at him to get lost and that he was trespassing.
I called my buddy who was up the street in another blind, told him what happened, then I peeked out the bottom of my blind to make sure he wasn't there, then I went to find him and give him hell.

I found him hiding in the bushes trembling, and let him have it, took his bullets and escorted him off the property. I was going to call the cops, as 1, he walked and left his napsack by a 4x8 sheet of plywood that said "no trespassing" and 2. Stalking a doe.

The guy was crapping his pants and apologized profusely, even offering me money to let him go, so I gave him a good talking to and let him go. No sense in his family having to deal with cross border matters because of his stupidity.

stupid people out there.

:eek:Amazing. Amazing that the hunting ban isn't Canada wide and the same should hold true for the guide prohibitation! While the guide should be depended upon for some of the finer points of law governing the hunt situation, the hunter should also be reponsible for a good working knowledge of the regulations. Leaving the meat or a sizeable edible portion of it behind:mad: is unforgiveable. You harvest the animal for your use, not to 'purposefully' help provide for nature. And, in my opinion, your meat losses from the likes of freezer burn shouldn't be any greater than those of beef you've purchased and frozen. As hunters, it's incumbent upon us, in respect for the game, to obey the applicable rules and regulations and to minimize meat loss, at all stages of the process.

Au contraire my friend, I'm quite in favor of harsh punishments Canada wide for those who contravene provincial hunting laws like wasting game meat, or night hunting, exceeding bag limits, hunting without a license, hunting out of season, etc. They should all lose their hunting privileges. All ethical hunters would agree with that, no? :)
