In searching online/speaking with people who have tried them, i have seen a multitude of muzzle brakes designed for the SKS, varying from cheap NC star #### that falls off after the first few shots to uber expensive custom solutions.
What do you guys use and reccomend?

Only decent cheap ones are the Pin on or the Twist on ( but cannot find the AK 74 style that's twist on around here anymore ) But all the NC Star ones are junk.. I had one for another project, I gave it a tap on the end to seat it, and then notice it bent.

There are muzzle brakes(not a break) and flash hiders. Not the same thing. The former is designed to reduce excessive felt recoil and to a certain degree the muzzle jump. The latter just what it says, but doesn't really hide anything. Some devices can do both.
An SKS has virtually no recoil or muzzle jump. So a brake is really just decoration. Decorating your carbine isn't a horrible thing.

Have a look at our selection, HERE. OR Use our thread adapter, HERE. Then you can use any AK threaded break you want.

Not to knock that, But I had one of those threaded adapters and it was still subject to flying down range. I even drilled into the barrel for it to grip better.

Really only non perminate options are the twist on or pinned on. Or the Whitts one.

An SKS has considerable felt recoil after 4 or 500 rounds. Things get a little tender and i am hoping to avoid that.

If you are shooting that much, a better solution is a slip on rubber butt pad for the stock. No permanent mods to rifle, and you can use it on all you SKS's. With a brake on an SKS, all you are doing is adding weight to the very tip of an already nose heavy carbine, and preventing use of the bayonet.

Forum member Mobular sells a 1" rubber butt pad, iirc they are Chinese issue. I have one on my Russian, works great. Increased lop as well as a bit of a recoil absorber, he sells them for under $20 and they come with longer factory screws to attach it. You loose the use of the tool kit hole and storage in the buttstock but it's a non issue for me, I find an inch more in lop is perfect.

Save your money: ncstar ones are junk in general. Cheap screws. Non perpendicular holes. Misaligned
Sent a few down range unintentionally and btw when they loosen accuracy drops off.
Now the choate ones otoh, are excellent. If you can find one

Best way is to thread the muzzle to a 14x1 LH thread and use AK brakes. The bayonet can still be used if you modify it to a Yugo M59/66 style latching system.

See this is why Im getting tired of CGN... If the OP wants to buy a Muzzle brake, support him in his search, Its his money, its his gun, he can do what he likes. No need to be a #### about it.

If the recoil of your SKS is too much, try tucking a maxipad under your bra strap.

Do you tell people who shoot AR15 with brakes or CZ/VZ in 762 or 223 to do that as well?

Don't try and introduce logic into this. The "MB's are for pussies" crowd won't have any of it.

It's about more than recoil. It's also about muzzle flip.

And while the SKS is a soft shooter, it has more than zero recoil, and more than zero muzzle flip.

I don't have any useful advice for which MB to choose from, because I don't have one on either of my SKS's. But if you can find a good one, it will make at least some difference, and if that helps you shoot more/be a better shooter, then money well spent.

If I ever get one, it will be a linear compensator. Not quite ready to permanently alter my Russian.

OP, I know exactly what you're after. It's all about comfort. Maybe I'm getting old, but anything that helps you shoot all day and not feel the effects the next day is a good thing in my books. Maybe I will get that compensator after all (my ATI stock seems to be handling the recoil) and some maxi pads pads for my MPA. I know my shoulder will thank me.

Tight groups....

The slanted AK muzzle brake works well. It is small and light and will protect the crown and does a decent job of minimizing muzzle climb, especially when taking fast shots.
