Your picks for favorite cartridges in 2014, by caliber

The 30-06 is on lot's of lists, and even though I don't use it anymore, it's a great cartridge. I do wonder if it were introduced today if the case would be just slightly different? Just speculating. :)

30-06 case is very good already, I think.

My only temptation would be to blow it out and lengthen it as much as can be, and still fit in a standard length action. But that's been done by Winchester when they made their 300 win mag (regardless of belt). But then you lose one round in normal mags...

A 40 degree Ackley AI on an outstanding "re-standardization" of the 30-06 though. I have a 25-06 AI, and seeing an AI case next to a standard case just leaves you wondering why the heck things weren't done like that in the first place across the board. The military history of the 30-06, and the need to feed in machineguns, I suppose. In modern firearms, straight walls and a 40 degree shoulder with a medium length neck just seems to be the only thing that makes sense...

Steep shoulders on cases can apparently cause problems at the manufacturing level. If what I've read is true the rejection rate of the .284 Win was considerably higher than more normal cases back in the day and it was a long time before anyone wanted to take another crack at it. Things like that eat into profits.

Considering the WSM's, RSAUM's etc, I wonder if that was a problem that was ironed out with different manufacturing techniques or if it still exists to some degree?

Itt could be, or maybe the market has changed to where it is easier to pass the costs along to the end user. Or manufacturing flexibllity has changed enough make the extra cost recoverable in new rifle sales. One way or the other most decisions are about money.
